An Embarrassment of Riches

That's the thought that goes through my head in light of the news that now Elizabeth Warren is endorsing Hillary at 9 p.m. tonight on Rachel Maddow's show.

Compare this to the GOP where half the Republicans are ashamed to even admit they support their own party's nominee-as it such an admission could tarnish their careers.

You have GOPers trying to take back their endorsements.

Today Hillary has had:

1. Bernie come out and admit the process if fair and certainly at least hint that this is over.

2. Obama gave Hillary just about the best endorsement any Presidential candidate has ever received. Even Reagan never campaigned like this for Bush Sr.

3. Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer spoke to Bernie. I love the chat that Bernie and Harry Reid had. Bernie had his head down like he was in trouble with the teacher.

And Reid is his Minority Leader.

In all fairness, give Bernie credit. He's being a team player.

4. Joe Biden is going to speak with Bernie later.

5. And now, Elizabeth Warren tonight on Rachel Maddow.

"Sen. Elizabeth Warren will endorse former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for president during an interview on MSNBC at 9 p.m. on Thursday, two sources familiar with her plans confirmed."

"Warren, while becoming increasingly active as an attack dog against Donald Trump, has been careful not to tip her hand toward either Sen. Bernie Sanders or Clinton in the Democratic primary."

"But with Clinton securing the Democratic nomination this week, top Democrats have rushed to endorse her. After months of remaining officially neutral while signaling where his sympathies lie, President Barack Obama announced his support for Clinton in a video posted online Thursday afternoon. Two days earlier, Clinton was endorsed by House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi."

"Warren, with her fierce critiques of Wall Street financiers, is a darling of the progressive left — her backing may help smooth over the lingering tensions from Clinton's hard-fought primary battle with Sanders."

Earlier I had said this the best day ever for my life as a Democrat. It's true. Remember my first real election I followed was 1980 with Reagan blowing out Jimmy Carter. In 1984 he beat Mondale 49 states to 1.

Mondale was a weak candidate for those who falsely say Hilary is weak. He won with just 38 percent of the Dem vote in the primary and just a 2 point margin over Gary Hart.

The Bill Clinton years were good but then Gore lost-though part of the problem was the election was stolen. The other part is he should have been out on the trail with Bill.

So this will be the first time in my life we seen to have a real shot at following a Democratic Administration with another Democratic Administration.

Obama has been a very successful, consequential President.

But his legacy needs consolidating. The GOP could still undo it if they got in with 2017-what better wrecking ball than Donald Trump?

If Hillary wins, that means Obama's legacy will stand the test of time.

  1. Wow, Elizabeth Warren really went after Trump today! Nice. I'm usually bored silly by political speeches, but she really grabbed my attention. I only caught a short segment of the Biden speech, but offhand he seemed much more subdued.

I'd hate to see her give up her Senate seat, but then on the other hand, I wouldn't mind seeing her on the ticket. And in the unlikely case that streiff is right and Hillary does end up in prison (or impeached), it'd be nice to have a back up like her. =) (joking, I'm joking... sort of).

In fact, a back up like her would be an insurance policy against HRC ever being impeached!

Plus in 2024... we could have "Pocahontas" as president... now wouldn't that be something? Has there ever been a president with any native American ancestry? Well, none with any verified records (that I could find), but Charles Curtis (Hoover's VP) was 1/4 native American according to Wikipedia. Elizabeth Warren has a smaller percentage (of native American blood) than that, right?

    1. Also, it's interesting that D.C. statehood is a thing. It has a bigger population than Wyoming (for one) so it certainly qualifies in that regard, but in terms of disenfranchised Americans, Puerto Rico has a population of over 3.4 million (~6.5 Wyommings), so why not start there? It's bigger than Iowa... in fact it would be the 30th state in terms of population (with 21 states smaller than it, mostly red states).

In any case, I can't imagine Republicans agreeing to any of it. I've heard that when Hawaii and Alaska were admitted, they were seen as having offsetting senators, so that was a saving grace politically.

What else is there? American Somoa, Guam, Northern Marianas, and US Virgin Islands combined only amounts to about 375k people, plus it's not clear any of those places are likely to be Republican. It's so geographically spread out, it doesn't really work as a single political entity... not to mention (probable) huge cultural differences.

Still at some point this is going to be an issue (I predict) and the GOP is going to fight it tooth and nail, and eventually lose. That is if the GOP exists when it happens.

    2. Yes, I looked at Elizabeth Warren as a VP choice this morning.

      http://lastmenandovermen.blogspot.com/2016/06/hillarys-vice-president.html

I've been a skeptic of her's-mostly because I don't know if she can be a team player. Can she represent the Administration's views and not her own?

She can't criticize the Administration if she's part of it.

I worry that she is too big a believer.

Still she started to win me over by her speech and even better her Hillary endorsement.

I'm beginning to wonder if maybe it could work.

I have also decided that Al Franken is the best choice for a lot of reasons.

He's also a great attack dog, but unlike her, he's totally loyal to Hillary.

He'd never step on her toes.
