Red State: Republicans Should Confirm Merrick Garland ASAP

This is why I've been a Trump Democrat since last July.

I'm with Neera Tanden, this has been in my wildest dreams since July.

As Greg Sargent says:

"I see we are in for months of baseless, data-free "Trump will be super awesome among Rust Belt Reagan Dems" punditry."

When the reality is the Reagan Dems became GOPers years ago. 2016 will be the year of the Hillary Republicans.

Trump will expand the map alright-for Democrats. Scott Sumner argued that the GOP will give on the minimum wage come 2017.'

"Harding, You said:

“The GOP is the party of obstruction; it will refuse any minimum wage increase until a Republican is in office as President.”

"You have no imagination. They will be a chastened party in 2017, totally humiliated, and they’ll go along with Hillary. She’ll throw a bone like corporate tax reform (which she supports anyway.) Romney has already caved on the minimum wage; trust me the GOP will cave in 2017. The political mood of the country will be TOTALLY different from today, that’s always what happens after a blowout. In 1981, frightened Democratic Congressmen often voted for Reagan’s spending cuts."

"The interesting question will be whether the Fed keeps targeting inflation at 2%, as the minimum wage rises to $12."

For many GOPers, the chastening is beginning. A number burnt their party registration cards after Trump won last night.

Here is what Ben Howe writes at Erick Erickson's Red State.

"I lied to myself for years about who my allies were. No more."

Meanwhile, another at Red State states the obvious: GOPers should get behind Merrick Garland if they're smart-but this is the party who just nominated Donald Trump. What makes you think they are smart?

Still, this is sound logic.

"Now that Donald Trump is the presumptive nominee, this is not even a close call. There is absolutely no reason to drag this out any longer. Garland is not a great choice, but he is not a terrible one, either. And more than anything, he is old (for a modern Supreme Court appointment) and will be up for replacement in probably 10 years instead of 20 or 30."

"Republicans must know that there is absolutely no chance that we will win the White House in 2016 now. They must also know that we are likely to lose the Senate as well. So the choices, essentially, are to confirm Garland and have another bite at the apple in a decade, or watch as President Clinton nominates someone who is radically more leftist and 10-15 years younger, and we are in no position to stop it."

"In fact, if I were the Republicans, my main concern right now would be that Barack Obama would withdraw Garland’s nomination today. The fact that Merrick Garland still exists as an option right now is a gift that should not be squandered."

"The calculus has changed – confirm Merrick Garland before it is too late."

HT: Tom Brown.

They say you should be careful what you wish for. I've dreamt of the GOP nominating Trump since July last year. I don't feel sorry.

  1. Obama should tell McConnell he needs to make a humiliating speech about being in error about what the founders clearly intended... And that of course they should take up Garland's nomination immediately... To do otherwise would be unamerican.

  2. Mike, it'll be interesting to see if Cruz supports Trump now. RedState, Erickson and Beck have made enemies of those who've turned their backs on Jesus, America and liberty by supporting Trump... So if Cruz supports Trump now will they put him on their #Never enemies and to-ostricize-forever lists? I certainly hope so.

  3. What would have been perfect is if Obama had given the Senate a highly public ultimatum last week saying that they needed to publicly reverse themselves and commit to giving Merrick a hearing by Monday, starting with a personal meeting with Mitch McConnell, or he'd withdraw the nomination permanently.

Of course that would be pretty cold blooded treatment of Merrick... using him like a pawn... so it could have a drawback. I guess it would be even better had Merrick made such an announcement "reluctantly" supported by Obama.

Force those sniveling small-minded fuck-tards to make a tough decision... one they KNEW there'd be an excellent change they'd regret.

    1. Better yet, they could have included a list of senators that Merrick was to meet with on Monday: each and every one of them in an imperiled GOP senate seat this fall. That plus Ted Cruz.

Trump would have had a field day with that, and Indiana may have been even more of a blow out.

But force them to respond publicly... so now that they might have a change of heart, there's be no going back.

    1. A day after Beck discontinued his nationwide fasting campaign so planet Kolob would realize the emergency happening down here on Earth -- I would think nobody will ever listen to Beck again.

  5. Beck isn't the only one engaging in histrionics:
