Please remember this. Whether you are a Democrat or a Beltway pundit. Or an independent or even a sane Republican like Ben Howe or Jennifer Rubin.
"More to the point, those Republicans desperately trying to use the long-standing rules of their own nominating process to thwart this monster deserve our passionate support, not our disdain. This is not the moment to remind them that they partly brought this on themselves. This is a moment to offer solidarity, especially as the odds are increasingly stacked against them. Ted Cruz and John Kasich face their decisive battle in Indiana on May 3. But they need to fight on, with any tactic at hand, all the way to the bitter end. The Republican delegates who are trying to protect their party from the whims of an outsider demagogue are, at this moment, doing what they ought to be doing to prevent civil and racial unrest, an international conflict, and a constitutional crisis. These GOP elites have every right to deploy whatever rules or procedural roadblocks they can muster, and they should refuse to be intimidated."
"And if they fail in Indiana or Cleveland, as they likely will, they need, quite simply, to disown their party’s candidate. They should resist any temptation to loyally back the nominee or to sit this election out. They must take the fight to Trump at every opportunity, unite with Democrats and Independents against him, and be prepared to sacrifice one election in order to save their party and their country."
"For Trump is not just a wacky politician of the far right, or a riveting television spectacle, or a Twitter phenom and bizarre working-class hero. He is not just another candidate to be parsed and analyzed by TV pundits in the same breath as all the others. In terms of our liberal democracy and constitutional order, Trump is an extinction-level event. It’s long past time we started treating him as such."

Andrew Sullivan wrote this what seems like ages ago now. The GOP utterly failed to stop Trump.
But now it gets serious.
Literally our way of life is in peril.
I urge all of you, whether you are a Democrat, independent, sane Republicans, or a Beltway pundit even.
Ok, I know the pundits. They claim they are just about doing their jobs, just informing the public. But these are weasel words.
I had a bit of a confrontation with RealClearPolitics' David Byler on Twitter yesterday. He justified his latest Hillary bashing column as 'I'm just doing my job' and 'I can only worry about me.'

If you are checking the link, my discussion of him came in the P.S. section.
This is irresponsible on his part. His words are classic weasel words. The media flatters itself that it holds the feet of power to the fire.
Mostly this is just a lie they tell themselves. They never vetted properly George W. Bush in 2000 and then were his cheerleaders throughout most of his Presidency.
This, though, obscures from the fact that the media itself wields great power. It's not just whether it gets its facts right or not-in the Hilary email fake scandal, it has actually said many things that are false.

But it's not just about facts or truth. It's about the power of framing. It's possible to say nothing that is false and yet what you've said be badly misleading.
If the media won't fudge things just a little in Hillary Clinton's favor to help us avoid Hitler 2.0-which it won't with its pure hatred for her-then can they at least stop trying to fudge things against her quite so much?
On Tuesday last week when the IG email report came out the media had literally 11 negative stories for maybe 1 for Trump.
If you aren't biased then this should be more like 6 to 6 then 11 to 1. Maybe the media can at least not lie in ways that actually make Hitler 2.0 more rather than less likely?
But everyone, all of us, must for the next six months look at things through this simple prism: does it make a President Trump more or less likely?
Bernie Sanders' absurd attacks on the DNC make it more likely as was his Quixotic attempt to force a debate with Trump.

So Bernie is like the Leftists of 1933: the Marxists, the Communists, the Stalinists. Like Susan Sarandon the Left in 1933 argued that there was no difference between Hitler and the Social Democrats-who were mere 'Social Fascists'.
But all Democrats have to take this responsibility seriously. If you are a Democrat in California who in the past has leaned towards Bernie, you have to be honest with yourself and acknowledge that he had his chance and the party has chosen.
Hillary Clinton, regardless of who wins in your home state, will be our nominee. However, if you vote for Bernie, if enough of your fellow CA Dems do, then this will just enable Bernie and the media and the GOPers to again gloat that Hillary is a weak nominee, that she's not legitimate, that she's only the nominee because of Super Delegates or because of Debbie Wasserman-Schultz or because the system is rigged.
This will all serve to make a Hitler 2.0 Presidency more rather than less likely.
For GOPers like Jennifer Rubin or Ben Howe-you have to give them some significant respect.
They are admitting that there is something more important than even defeating Hillary Clinton. They are putting country and principle above partisanship at all costs.

There are Jewish conservatives like Ben Shapiro who the Trump supporters have threatened and have also threatened their families-they have said they need to go in the gas ovens.
This is why this is the one election I am breaking Godwin's Law.
Trump is Hitler 2.0. Either you want to stop him or you don't. Full Stop.
Yes or no. Yes or something else, which means no.
If you're a liberal pundit who spends more time talking about how weak a nominee Hillary is or are rooting for a Trump-Bernie debate than you ever do criticizing Donald Trump then you're answer is not yes.

Anyone who focuses on anything other than stopping and defeating Donald Trump has made their choice. They can make all their excuses.
Come 2017 if we have President Trump they will be cold comfort.
P.S. This is the one Marxist idea I agree with. You can indeed by subjectively innocent and objectively guilty-as many Marxists themselves were back in 1933 with their assistance to Hitler.
It doesn't matter why you say you say or do something. All that matters is the effect of what you say or do.

... and yet I'd prefer W to Trump. W and his neocon cronnies were stupid, dishonest and arrogant enough to get us involved in a seemingly endless war across a good chunk of the Muslim world, but they still seem MUCH more stable than Trump does. Like in that meme I linked you too yesterday, it's only slightly outside the bounds of plausibility that Trump would invade Scotland (for insulting him and perhaps so he can expand his golf course properties there).
ReplyDeleteAt this point I just care about beating Trump in 2016, not defending W in 2000.
ReplyDeleteThe same trajectory that got us W has not gotten us Trump
