Daily KOS Berner: Be Ye Perfect as Our Messiah on Earth Is Perfect

Reading this post kind of tells you why the Berners are such self-righteous twits with their heads in the clouds. Basically they think Bernie is perfect.

Indeed, they think he's even more flawless than Beyonce. Turns out, the Berners aren't judgmental prigs, this Berner explains, they simply are #Blessed enough to support a candidate without flaws. Seriously. Wish I was kidding:

"Do you wonder why Bernie supporters sometimes sound smug or come across as self righteous and judgmental? There is a reason for this, but it isn’t what you think. See, we’ve all come to expect our preferred politicians to be essentially devils we can live with. Choosing “the lesser of two evils” has become a common refrain, and for good reason. We expect our candidates to have major flaws, which we try to deny, defend, or admit but balance against their positives."

"But for the first time in perhaps decades, we finally have a candidate that isn’t merely a lesser of two evils. One who doesn’t come to the race with serious baggage or with policy positions that badly conflict with liberal ideals or common decency. A politician that doesn’t act in a way that is sometimes embarrassing or that lacks integrity."

The very idea that a politician can have no flaws shows you the Other Worldliness of the Berners. And actually he's wrong. Bernie has a few positions conflict with liberal ideals: he has a terrible record on gun control for starters.

He has also repeatedly lied about his record in Vermont. claiming that he lost in 1988 because he was for an assault weapon ban. What he always leaves out was that he changed his positon and won his rematch against the same GOP Congressman who changed his positoin fro 1988 to supporting the ban.

The NRA decided to support the socialist over the GOPer who wanted an assault weapon ban.

On immigration he has a pretty mixed record as well-and he went on Lou Dobb's zeonphobic program in 2007 to argue against an immigration reform bill.

Then you have Bernie's refusal to provide any flesh or details to his game show like promises. Now we have him refusing to criticize the violence and death threats of the Berners in Nevada.

He's far from perfect, but the Berners have their fingers in their ears. Now this really got me.

"But for many who aren’t yet feeling the Bern, they cannot understand the relief and excitement of supporting a candidate that is so genuine and honest, so consistently committed to liberal principles, so dedicated to equality and fairness, and so experienced at statesmanship. Finally, we can get on board with a campaign without major problems we have to defend, justify, or ignore. Bernie is the guy the Democrats have been needing since the death of RFK. He is the rare politician we don’t have to worry might just be telling us what we want to hear. We don’t have to fret that he’ll sell out the people for the sake of corporate or military buddies/donors. Bernie is a politician that we can actually trust. And the excitement of that can be hard to contain."

Wow. First of all, I'm not someone who 'doesn't yet feel the Bern', rather I'm someone who will never feel the Bern. Like most of my fellow Democrats, I'm just not that into Bernie Sanders.

I know that I won't be able to miss him until he's gone.

But RFK?! Now I truly do understand. The Berners think Bernie is the Ghost of RFK.

RFK has this totally undeserved reputation as a liberal icon. It's ironic that Hubert Humphrey was seen as a reactionary sellout in 1968-no doubt through association with LBJ.

After all, he had a much more liberal record of accomplishment in the Senate prior to joining LBJ's White House than Bobby's older brother.
Why was RFK seen as so liberal and pure in 1968? Basically because he had never held elected office. What Bobby benefitted from was not having a record.

In fact, he was the voice in Jack's ear urging him to not talk too much about civil rights back in 1960. When he was JFK's Attorney General he worked with J. Edgar Hoover to wiretap Martin Luther King's phone calls.

"On October 10, 1963, U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy committed what is widely viewed as one of the most ignominious acts in modern American history: he authorized the Federal Bureau of Investigation to begin wiretapping the telephones of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Kennedy believed that one of King's closest advisers was a top-level member of the American Communist Party, and that King had repeatedly misled Administration officials about his ongoing close ties with the man. Kennedy acted reluctantly, and his order remained secret until May of 1968, just a few weeks after King's assassination and a few days before Kennedy's own. But the FBI onslaught against King that followed Kennedy's authorization remains notorious, and the stains on the reputations of everyone involved are indelible."

Yet, RFK had the purist image and LBJ and his Vice President were badly tarnished. Just shows you how far image and reality so often are in politics.
Yet the Berner author claimed that Bernie was like RFK in that neither have any flaws!
The truth is that the onus against insiders helps those with little record of accomplishment like RFK in 1968 and Bernie today.

I have to say how relieved I am that the Democratic party has dodged this bullet. What a travesty it would have been to nominate someone so unqualified for the job.

  1. I think what truly infuriates me about the hardcore Sanders purists is that they have ignored President Obama's many achievements made over the past seven years and Hillary Clinton's progressive record, going back to when she was a college student.

That same starry-eyed "my candidate is so PERFECT!!" attitude is similar to what I saw in Nader supporters back in 2000.

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are not perfect--they are only human, after all--but by God they have achieved much in terms of progressive change here in the US. Bernie's record shows nothing of the sort.
