Donald Trump Doesn't Know a Lot About the Issues

This is a self-evident point and hardly a newsflash, except for who is saying it. Would you believe, Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, who has endorsed Donald Trump?

"Mitch McConnell is getting a lot of attention this morning for his startlingly candid admission, in a new Bloomberg Politics podcast, that Donald Trump “doesn’t know a lot about the issues” and has not displayed the requisite “seriousness of purpose” for the presidency. And it certainly is clarifying to have the top Senate Republican admit this about the party’s standard bearer."

Good morning. Donald Trump doesn't know much about the issues. Now vote Donald Trump. Have a nice day.

Donald Trump doesn't respect the separation of powers and an independent judiciary. His attack on the judge handling his Trump U case are wholly inappropriate. Now vote for Donald Trump so he can appoint the next three to four Supreme Court Judges.

What's ironic if that after riffing on Obama's teleprompter for the last 5 years, McConnell now recommends Trump use a script.

“He needs someone highly experienced and very knowledgeable because it’s pretty obvious he doesn’t know a lot about the issues,” McConnell said. “You see that in the debates in which he’s participated. It’s why I have argued to him publicly and privately that he ought to use a script more often — there is nothing wrong with having prepared texts.”…

“I think he’d have a much better chance of winning if he would quit making so many unfortunate public utterances and stick to the script,” he said. McConnell said he delivered that message in person when the two were in the green room together at the recent National Rifle Association convention in Louisville.

“I said, ‘Hey Donald, you got a script?’ and he pulled it out of his pocket. He said, ‘You know I hate scripts, they’re so boring.’ And I said, ‘Put me down in favor of boring. You’ve demonstrated that you have a lot of Twitter followers and you’re good at turning on a big audience. Now you need to demonstrate you have the seriousness of purpose that is required to be president of the United States, and most candidates on frequent occasions use a script.’ So we’ll see whether that’s something he’s capable of doing.”

"McConnell is also trying to reassure us that a President Trump would not be an existential danger to the very nation."

"Finally, McConnell gamely suggests that Trump will not go off the rails as president because he’ll “have to respond to the right-of-center world that elected him.” In other words, don’t worry, even if Trump is a dangerous sociopath, Republican lawmakers and voters will keep him in line. But by McConnell’s own admission, it remains to be seen whether Trump can demonstrate the requisite gravity for the job or even read from a damn script. If this is the case, why should anyone have faith that Trump will heed the “center right world” and remain within accepted norms as president? McConnell’s arguments are self-refuting."

Others have said no worries: if Trump is President checks and balances will neutralize his abuse of power-or at least his worst cases.

Maybe they would maybe they won't. But isn't the more sensible risk strategy be not to test it?

In other news, McConnell is considering un-endorsing Donald Trump.

"The top-ranking Senate Republican has made clear in multiple interviews over the course of the last two weeks that Donald Trump's comments about Indiana-born Judge Gonzalo Curiel being a "Mexican" are unacceptable."

"But Mitch McConnell, in an interview with Bloomberg published Friday, went a step further, and would not categorically rule out revoking his endorsement of Trump as the GOP's presumptive presidential nominee."

  1. Mike, did I leave you a link to TheResurgent article with more rumors of a coup at the convention?

I it doesn't happen. Successfully anyway. I definitely want Trump to be the nominee. Jennifer Rubin is fanning the flames of a coup today with a piece directed at the Faith and Freedom conference going on: reminding them that to vote for Trump is a violation of Christian principles, and suggesting that the evangelical leaders should lead the charge on this front and be the heroes of the party.

And then this happened: a GOP senator at that same Faith and Freedom conference led the crowd to pray for Obama's death:
    https://www.rawstory.com/2016/06/georgia-senator-prays-for-obamas-death-at-christian-gathering-let-his-days-be-few/

He invoked Psalm 109:7. He didn't read the thing, but invoked that particular Psalm and prayed that Obama's days be short. What does the psalm say?:

Let his days be few; Let another take his office.
Let his children be fatherless And his wife a widow.
Let his children wander about and beg; And let them seek sustenance far from their ruined homes.

There's more, but I'll stop there. That's the kind of morality Rubin thinks will step up and lead the charge against Trump?

  2. Regarding that GOP Senator: just Christ.

As for Trump I have been a bit worried as Sumner said that if this gets too bad too early that could happen.

Still doing such a thing would be an uphill climb to say the least.

All the GOPers like Ryan, Rubio, Rand Paul, Ted Cruz want to wait till 2020 as this year is gone even if the nominee was changed.

I heard an interesting point on Morning Joe. Losing Presidential candidates-Romney, Gore, etc, end up with the rep of a 'loser.'

That will be tough for Trump to have to deal with.

Yes, and that would be fun. But like you I'm more interested in making sure the GOP suffers the maximum damage possible, and I think that means Trump should be the nominee. It might be nice for a failed coup (with Ted Cruz's fingerprints all over it) to come up short. Maximum internal strife in the GOP is to be desired. We just need Trump to survive the convention.

Hopefully he can't raise much money, and insists on draining resources from down ballot races to shore up his campaign.

Hannity and Laura Ingraham are berating the would-be mutineers, so that's good.

I'd like to see Trump survive the convention and then uncork his rage and vindictiveness against the plotters. Maybe he can file 1000s of lawsuits against RedState, Erickson, etc.

    2. I certainly want Trump to be the nominee. My concern is the chance he wouldn't be.

I think it's probably too late for a coup. Bill Kristol thinks an independent bid is more likely though there isn't all that time for either.

The worry is what Donnie Deutsch suggested. Maybe Trump can't take it anymore and just quits. Just says forget it at some point as he's going to get a loser label.

Not saying that happens and don't want it to.

    3. I'd be OK with him quitting about 48 hours prior to the actual voting.
