Bernie and Obama to Meet Thursday

As I said in my last piece, there are some good signs that Bernie is going to land the plane soon.

Tom Brown mentions a number of them from his speech last night:

"It is amazing that he didn't throw in the towel last night though. A few good things though: 1) He emphasized that Donald Trump needs to be stopped. 2) He didn't actually attack Clinton. 3) While he mentioned Hillary called, he didn't say anything negative (though the crowd booed, as you say... he did raise his hand in a perfunctory fashion to signal them to stop, but it wasn't very convincing) 4) Nobody booed when he mentioned he received a call from Obama."

All this is true. For the record, I wasn't shocked that he didn't concede last night. Even Hillary didn't that night back in June, 2008. Indeed she was introduced as 'the next President of the United States.'

Even I have to admit that it's tough to lose. As a Hillary supporter in 2008 I was very disappointed that she came so close but fell short. I was never PUMA. But it took me the weekend to accept she had lost and move on to Obama.

According to what NY Times reporter YAMICHE ALCINDOR said on MSNBC last night the Bernie supporters in the audience were talking about taking it all the way to the convention. But after hearing Obama congratulate Hillary, a number changed their tune and said it's time to finish up.

President Barack Obama says the Democratic primary race is over — and he congratulated Hillary Clinton, though he isn’t ready to endorse quite yet.

But he did say yes to Bernie Sanders when the Vermont senator asked to come to the White House on Thursday.

"In a statement late Tuesday, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Clinton’s “historic campaign inspired millions and is an extension of her lifelong fight for middle-class families and children.”

"Obama, Earnest said “congratulated Secretary Clinton for securing the delegates necessary to clinch the Democratic nomination for president.”

As for Sanders, Obama thanked him for “energizing millions of Americans” and raising issues of economic inequality and special interest influence.

Earnest’s statement said that the meeting will be “to continue their conversation about the significant issues at stake in this election that matter most to America's working families.”

"But politics is also on Obama’s mind, with his own interest in hitting the campaign trail and on unifying the Democratic Party in preparation for Clinton’s race against Donald Trump."

“The President looks forward to continuing the conversation with Senator Sanders,” Earnest said, “about how to build on the extraordinary work he has done to engage millions of Democratic voters, and to build on that enthusiasm in the weeks and months ahead.”

That Bernie asked for this meeting is very important. That suggests to me like Bernie knows he has to land the plane and this will be a major part of it.

  1. Mike, here's one I'm going to email to my dad: Jennifer Rubin compares Hillary to Nixon "but in the nicest possible way" ... actually, it's not a bad piece:

  2. I've made this analogy before that Hillary is like Nixon but in a good way

    1. Oh yeah, I remember! Maybe Rubin has been reading your posts? (No H/T though)

BTW, did you see that Sumner gave you an H/T yesterday?

  3. I did, the second within a couple of weeks.

    Be still my beating heart.

But I've finally learnt how to deal with Sumner. Don't argue with him on econ as he'll just say I don't know what I'm talking about.

Be brief-I've practiced that for awhile.

Also know when to disengage. I raz all the Trumpsters in his comments like Harding, Art Deco, Massieto, etc, but know when to say when.

Let them be the ones to comment too often.

Also: comment early in posts to get responses. LOL.

I'm becoming a regular Sumner Whisperer.
