We know about all the Republicans who are suddenly #With Her.

A recent poll shows that even 26 percent of conservatives won't vote for Trump-as opposed to 8 percent of liberals not voting for Hillary.
Now Morning Joe may not vote for Trump?
"Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough, who's long been criticized for appearing too pro-Donald Trump, said Thursday morning he won’t vote for the presumptive Republican nominee if he continues to stand by his proposed temporary ban on Muslim immigration."
“The convention offers him an opportunity – [it] will be the first time a lot of Americans have really looked at Donald Trump, the candidate. We see this all the time. The vice presidential selection offers him an opportunity,” Scarborough said, noting Trump is running out of chances to ideologically pivot as a candidate.
"The former Florida congressman went on to say if Trump goes into August with his current polling numbers, he would lost “big time” in the fall, so his campaign “better be all hands on deck right now. This is not going to be a slow turn."
"After Trump said in a Wednesday night interview that he’s not backing away from his proposed sweeping ban on Muslim immigration into the country, Scarborough said he was disappointed in the candidate."
"And I gotta say I was surprised and disappointed ... that yesterday, he stuck by the Muslim ban. That's a loser. It's a loser with the majority of Americans,” the MSNBC host said. “And you've got Republicans like me. I just, I'm not going to vote for a guy" like that, he said.

This is why you are going to see a lot of Republicans unwilling to support Trump. To say this publicly basiclaly brands you publicly as a racist. It's a real double bind. If your running for public office-or in it-you either refuse to support your own party's nominee or you do support him and risk being tarred forever with his broad brush.
Even the Koch Brothers aren't willing to support him.
"Republican donors want nothing to do with Donald Trump."
"On Wednesday morning, the presumptive GOP nominee, who has largely self-financed his presidential bid so far, announced that he would be soliciting checks from small contributors and would soon make a decision about whether to accept big contributions from the ranks of Republican megadonors."
"But in interviews with more than a dozen major GOP funders, not one on Wednesday would commit to donating to Trump. Some raised the possibility that they would focus solely on giving to House or Senate candidates."
"Others went further in expressing their discontent: Representatives of Charles and David Koch, the billionaire industrialists who helped to bankroll the rise of the tea party, warned the brothers could sit out the presidential campaign entirely — or even back Hillary Clinton."
"With so many of the GOP’s funders closing their checkbooks, battles over money are breaking out behind closed doors. And as concern grows that Republicans will suffer a shortfall that could stymie candidates up and down the ballot, some foresee looming cash fights pitting Trump against congressional Republicans who are anxious to preserve their hard-won majorities.
“There will definitely be high competition for resources,” said Curt Anderson, a former Republican National Committee political director and veteran party strategist. “There’s going to be a push-and-pull. You have a nominee that isn’t universally liked, so there’s going to be a lot of jockeying.”
"To say big donors are turned off by Trump might be an understatement. On the day that the GOP crowned a de facto nominee, some of the party’s most prolific benefactors talked openly about backing the expected standard-bearer for the rival party."
"Brad Freeman, a Los Angeles investment banker who donated over $1 million to a pro-Jeb Bush super PAC and who has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to congressional Republicans over the years, said he planned to donate to “one of the presidential candidates,” though he declined to say which party he’d support.
“Don’t have to decide before maybe October!” he added.
Perhaps the biggest surprise, though, might be the Kochs. Last month, Charles Koch told ABC News that it’s “possible” Clinton would make a better president than Trump. On Wednesday, a spokesman for the brothers declined to rule out the possibility of backing the former secretary of state, though he implicitly criticized both her campaign and Trump’s.
Mark Holden, the general counsel and senior vice president at Koch Industries, said Koch-funded political groups would consider supporting a general election candidate who is “able to garner support from the public with a positive message in support of the issues we care about, and did not engage in personal attacks and mudslinging.”

The trouble is it's not just about donors wasting their money on a losing campaign. It's getting behind a guy who publicly refused to criticize David Duke. Who claimed not to know anything about 'any white supremacists.'
How do you publicly support someone associated with white supremacy? Someone endorsed by the KKK who did not condemn such support? GOPers in office are each going to cope with their own pressures.
It's sort of choose your own poison.

Mike my dream is still alive: swastikas and white sheets in Cleveland!
ReplyDeleteAnd as you know I have little sympathy for the sanctimonious "God's on our side" religiosity of many in the #NeverTrump movement, but I did like this from Erickson today:
http://theresurgent.com/i-think-the-lord-came-over-me/
Although she *was* a Bernie supporter, so maybe your sympathies are with the tow-truck driver... Lol.
DeleteAlso his accompanying graphic is a little on the hyperbolic side, as usual (he didn't decapitate her on the spot with a hunting knife!).
BTW, every time I see that photo I think of some sort of weird terrorist class (like a day-time talk show cooking class maybe).
"OK, everyone, and welcome back to fundamentals of terrorism, 101. I'm so glad we decided to have class outside today. So beautiful this morning! Ahmed, why aren't you dressed in black?? Well don't forget for next time, OK? Well then, everybody, did everyone bring a Christian or apostate for beheading? ... Ayaan? No??, what are we going to do with you?! Oh well, you'll just have to share with Mohamed then. Mohamed... now be nice, and share with Ayaan. You guys! ... Now then, did you all bring a sharp knife with at least a 25 cm blade? ... Excellent!!... I think we're ready to get started then!"
I hated the 'God's on our side' religiosity of the #NeverTrump movement too. Until now that Trump is the nominee. LOL
ReplyDeleteI was against #NeverTrump until now. Now, if all these ultra conservatives want to campaign against the GOP nominee then 'God bless em.'
LOL
At the same time I'm glad McCain is supporting Trump, and Kelly Ayotte is "supporting but not endorsing" Trump. (A new standard for weasel wording?). Makes their senate seats even more precarious.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile Paul Ryan is putting some distance. Perfect!
They actually have McCain privately saying that Trump makes him more vulnerable in his re-election campaign November.
DeleteLooks like Sumner won't back Trump even if he comes out in favor of NGDPLT. Now that's saying something!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.themoneyillusion.com/?p=31678
It just occurred to me the causal reader might misread that as a variation on LGBT, Lol... with new laws on bathroom usage in large swaths of the South... or what Bill Maher calls "Bathroom Birtherism". Somebody should ask Sumner how the new laws will affect people like him... you know: NGDPLT. "Scott, was it difficult coming out as NGDPLT? How did your parents respond?"
Mike, the fun just never stops. Now Perry (who Erickson et al have been wanting to "draft" for months) has endorsed Trump! I guess his name goes on the enemies list with the other enemies of Jesus and America! Lol.
ReplyDeleteMy comment on Sumner's:

Mike, is this a backhanded endorsement of HRC from a writer on Erickson's new sight "The Resurgent?" After all, he doesn't actually call HER the evil one:
ReplyDeletehttp://theresurgent.com/i-think-were-screwed/
"So, what do to? The general election comes down to Hillary vs. Friend of Hillary.
DeleteTo me, it’s a very simple decision. Hillary is what she appears to be: A lifelong, committed liberal Democrat. Trump is Philippe Pétain, Vidkun Quisling, and Viktor Yanukovych rolled into one. He’s a self-important, double-dealing pretender who hasn’t a conservative strand of DNA in his genetic makeup. And I’m increasingly convinced that Trump is actually evil."
I wish I could leave comments there: I'd write:
Delete"He’s a self-important, double-dealing pretender who of course has many many strands of conservative DNA in his genetic makeup (just look at him!). And I’m increasingly convinced that Trump is actually evil."
