Larry Wilmore Plays the Donald Trump Card

As noted in my last post, Larry Wilmore may be an ok comedian, but he's no President Obama.

"For me, besides the issue of the N word, I didn't think Wilmore was that funny. I just feel his humor here was in many places a little too blunt-not subtle enough. There is a dryness to Obama's humor that makes it work."

"This is not a question of being too tough or more gentle. You can hit hard but in a more subtle way. So I just found Wilmore a little wide of the mark."

"You want subtlety-start with Stephen Colbert 2006 roasting W. That was one for the ages. "

Some of his jokes were ok, but for the most part they were a little too blunt.

But in his interview with Glenn Thrush, I take real issue with him. He is buying into a very nasty Donald Trump attack-not surprisingly it's a sexist attack on Hillary Clinton.

"But when it comes to William Jefferson Clinton — whom he quarter-jokingly referred to as a “super-predator” on the “Nightly Show” recently — whoa."

"As president of the United States, he decided it was a good thing to fool around with a 22-year-old staffer [Monica Lewinsky] in the White House,” a stone-serious Wilmore, the keynote speaker of this weekend’s White House Correspondents Dinner told me during an (otherwise light) interview for POLITICO’s “Off Message” podcast."

“It was predatory behavior, you know,” added Wilmore, who grew up in a Roman Catholic family outside of Los Angeles. “I really supported the Clintons politically, but that really bugged me, that whole Clinton thing. … [I]t [still] does, because it's not — even though they both said it was consensual, you're the president of the United States. That's the workplace. You know, that's a young girl. Come on, man. You've got a young daughter. Come on, you don’t gotta do that. That's not right.”

He does know that 22 years old is above the age of consent, doesn't he? You know who else was having an affair with his intern at the same time he was throwing stones at Bill Clinton as GOP Speaker of the House? Newt Gingrich.

The man who replaced Newt, Bob Livingston, also was not 'without sin', and his replacement, Dennis Hastert, turned out to be a pedophile. That's a predator, not someone who has a consensual relationship with an adult.

In truth, there is a long line of great male leaders who had what you might call 'weak flesh.' LBJ, JFK.

You know who else had such a weakness? Martin Luther King, Jr.

None of this makes it right. But what Wilmore is doing here is playing the Trump card. He is attacking Bill Clinton as a way to hurt his wife politically.

In the 60s, J. Edgar Hoover was dredging up dirt on MLK to discredit him politically. This is an old game.

History judges Hoover harshly for doing this. No one says he had point because MLK was unfaithful to his wife.

But with Hillary this goes beyond trying to discredit a male political figure for his own infidelities, it's trying to discredit his wife for his affairs, affairs for which she was the only pure victim of-not Ms. Lewinsky who knowingly had this relation with a married man.

On the subject of being a predator, Wilmore seems not to realize that Trump was accused by Ivana of raping her during their marriage-for the sin of sending him to a bad hairstylist. Wish I were kidding.

P.S. We live in a new era today where male politicians can't survive such 'bimbo eruptions' as they once did. There is much less tolerance among the public for it.

Or more realistically, the media used to keep these secrets. I'm of two minds on this development:

1. If male politicians become more faithful as a job requirement, this is in itself a good thing.

2. Still, the Devil's Advocate view is maybe we are losing out on some great politicians and leaders because of this stringency.

The trouble with men like Bill Clinton and LBJ is they never turned off. Both W and then Obama were the corrective to Bill-they both would go home early to their wives and families. But LBJ and Bill never wanted it to end. The job was 24/7 for them-by their own preference.

I still wonder sometimes if by killing man's demons, we also destroy some angels.

But this is sort of a larger, more philosophical musing about society.
