Rich Lowry's Full Throated Defense of Donald Trump

Trump promised to be the greatest jobs president ever but he's already lost a lot of jobs thanks to his vile comments about Mexicans. Not only has his tv empire crumbled-NBC, Univision, Macy's,-even his golf buddies are turning on him-but think of all the jobs lost with the end of The Apprentice.

However, you know who is defending him? Tea Party conservatives. Rush Limbuagh is. Rush was boasting the other day about playing golf with The Donald. That's good, as Trump's other golf buddies sound like they may not play with him anymore now that they see what a bigot he really is.

Now the National Review's Lowry is defending him. I find this a very welcome developemnt:

"NBC, Univision and Macy’s have all thrown The Donald under the bus, in the heaviest blow to schlock culture in this country since the cancellation of “Jersey Shore.”

"The carnage ranges widely across media, encompassing reality TV (“Celebrity Apprentice”), entertainment properties (the Miss USA Pageant), fashion (the Donald J. Trump Signature Collection) and even fragrance (Success by Trump)."

"Although this isn’t anything new. The companies fleeing from Trump were happy to be in bed with him so long as it suited their business interests. Now, they are acting on what has become one of the foremost principles of American public life: It’s no longer enough to be offended, you must punish the offender."

"As it happens, Trump’s new enemies are doing him an enormous political favor, at least in the short term. There are few things that benefit a Republican candidate in the current environment of left-wing bullying more than getting fired and boycotted for something he’s said. And Trump’s smash-mouth response — oh, yeah, I’m going to sue Univision for a cool $500 million — will be even more endearing to primary voters."

Well what it comes to is that it's social sanction. If Trump is criticized but all the big name companies continue to be his friends then the criticism isn't really performative. Trump is really becoming a pariah which is what you want to do if you want to make such race baiting socially unacceptable.

Not with conservatives. There is almost an inverse relationship between his stock with the mainstream and with the Right.

The lower he falls in standing with mainstream America and Madison Avenue the more he is lionized as a True Believer by the Limbaughs and Lowrys of the world.

Still, as endearing as it truly will be to primary voters, he won't end up as the nominee and what then? Will Limbaugh and Lowry's love keep him warm then as he's more or less burned his bridges and his tv empire?

I can understand why he's so beloved. Just what Lowry said. Ok, he pejoratively and erroneously refers to it as 'left wing bullying' but there's no way to deny that liberals have been ascending lately.

All those SJC rulings. The President's move on overtime pay. His opening an embassy in Cuba. His move against for profit colleges.

Now he's even moving against the collusion of the airlines. Notice how none of the drop in fuel prices made it through to the consumer.

What he calls bullying is just the liberals finally having a measure of success.

However, the point is well taken. It is galling and maddening to conservatives, all the more so as there is nothing they can do about it other than lash out impotently-their impotence only adding to their rage. Nothing worse than impotent rage.

Trump is a great candidate for them-he is very cathartic.

Lowry, for what it's worth-not much-tries to pretty up Trump's comments. He only made it sound like Mexicans are all moral defectives but Lowry explains what he meant is just that Mexicans are poorly educated-no college-and college is what you need for success. We shouldn't allow Mexicans into the country because they lack a college education.

This is another whole discussion. I've been on full tilt-out of pure joy-that the President has finally been holding colleges accountable.

If you're going to leave students with six figures of debt then you can at least make sure they do get a job commensurate with what they paid for.

If not then how do you get to collect every penny just the same?

So it's ironic that he wants to extol the virtues of a college education at a time when student loan debt is truly at epidemic proportions and when so many graduates are not able to get a job in their field of study.

As to the Donald, while I get tired of Chris Mathews and Ed Sullivan ogling him-as I said last night in a line that I feel needs repeating; they sound like women revealing they have rape fantasies about the schoolyard bully-I can't think of a better development.

The more conservatives embrace him, the harder it will be for Jeb to con Latinos into thinking that the GOP has anything but the purest contempt for any immigrants of dubious whiteness.
