There is no asterisk except in Andrew Marchand's mind. How is it that Willie Mays can accept A-Rod has surpassed him-Records are meant to be broken-but this is not good enough for the A-Rod haters?
In any case this is pure speculation. A-Rod is no doubt the most tested man outside of prison so if he is taking something the MLB tests are worthless.
And to me, if there is some wonder drug that allows him to perform at this level why would you begrudge this? What a boon to humanity if it enables us to at least put a dent in the Spirit of Gravity of age?
To descend for the moment into such speculation if A-Rod were using something-and I, Marchand, and anyone else have no proof whatsoever that he does, it would likely be not steroids but human growth hormone (HGH).
There is no rational reason why you would call HGH a steroid-it's thanks to HGH that Majgi Johnson is such a paragon of good health 25 years after being diagnosed as HIV positive.
In the case of Roger Clemens this wonderful competitor is being kept out of the Hall of Fame even though going by just his 'first career'-his time in Boston through 1996 would have been good enough to put him in the HOF. If HGH enabled him to pitch so masterfully into his mid 40s this is to be celebrated not demonized.
It must really be frustrating for people like Marchand who had hoped A-Rod would be a total bust this year so they could gloat some more.

P.S. It's still amazing to me that time when in 2006 in Houston Clemens actually pitched to his son in batting practice. To me that's just a tremendous moment in human history.
