I wrote about this yesterday, but I'm writing a little more first so hopefully regular readers get it that my name is no longer Diary of a Republican Hater and am now Last Men and OverMen.
http://lastmenandovermen.blogspot.com/2015/07/with-regret-diary-of-republican-hater.html
In truth the name was always meant some what ironically. The sad truth is that in today's world not too many people understand irony. And I don't say this only about the Right either. I had always wanted to call this blog Abortion on Demand which was a joke meant to send up conservatives.
Rush Limbaugh would say that a pro choice person wants to have unlimited abortions, they want as many abortions as possible; ie, that pro choice people like me are abortion maximialists. So I was mocking him with the name.
However, before I started this blog-or just when I had started it-I tried the name out on Daily KOS and got banned the same day. That was even shorter than my stint at Firedoglake!

Not many folks out there have much irony. The like to read people who they agree with-though it's impressive if they even read at all.
Ray Lopez-for those who read Money Illusion, he needs no introduction-is rather enigmatic, to say the least. Sumner mocks him more than any other commentator-whereas he simply ignores Major Freedom.
Sumner and I have been maybe a little friendly lately believe it or not. See if that can last.
I'm not always sure what Ray is saying either-he claims that the Fed has no effect on the economy. Here is his blog.
Literally in 7 years he's written 2 posts.
http://raylopez99.blogspot.com/2015/03/fed-has-no-effect-on-economy.html#comment-form
I visited him last night and left him a couple of comments-my comments are literally just the second time anyone other than Ray himself has left a comment in 7 years. Back in a 2009 post someone named Jennifer thanked him for providing information(!)
As I told him in my comment, he needs to tease out the implications of his theory to really make any sense of it.
But I'm talking about him at all as he did leave me what was in many ways the most perspicacious comment I've gotten here outDiary of a Republican Hater Last Men and OverMen in a long time.
"It's is IS NOT. Its is what you mean. I get it though, you're a redneck pretending to be a liberal red-state hater. Nice shtick dude."

I actually appreciate being called 'shtick'-Rush Limbaugh takes offense at this as do most people be they Left or Right but I'll take that.
It kind of recalls what they say about Seth MacFarlane-he's a liberal but a conservative liberal.

Intrestingly, Limbaugh does have some nice things to say about him.

So if I'm close to anyone it might be MacFarlane. Not that I would get along with Rush.
Even Zizek said that at heart he's really a conservative. Here is a good quote from him:
"But wait! This doesn’t mean that I massively despise myself. No, I like my printed work. I live for that — for theory, really. And shamelessly. I hate this leftist humanitarian attitude: People are starving! Children in Africa! Who needs theory? No! We need useless theory more than ever today, I claim."

He's another who tends to be labeled 'a buffoon, not serious.'
In some ways I'd agree that I'm conservative. In America today the truly conservative position is on the mild Center Left.
Anyway, it turns out that only Republicans are allowed to hate. You can't hate them. So even political correctness works for them. Not that I hate them-no! I was thinking of calling my new blog Diary of a Republican Lover but thought that would be a little too on the nose.
As to Last Men, I think if anything might sum them up is that they worry much more about unkind thoughts-like someone saying they 'hate' a bunch of privileged racist fat cats-than real suffering and injustice all around them.
They can handle homeless men freezing to death in the cold-after all, they reason, he's probably been irresponsible in his choices; and anyway, he's a stranger! but not unkind jibes at Republicans.
Here Caplan tells you that if you ignore the homeless man and go back the important things of your life like Starbucks and tweeting your 'bae' you're just being a good person.
http://econlog.econlib.org/archives/2011/01/the_stranger.html#
Here Caplan claims that 'The Drowning Child' example is extreme.
http://econlog.econlib.org/archives/2012/02/singer_vs_the_s.html
You shouldn' t look at the world's poor as 'drowning children.' What about grown men freezing to death? I mention this as there have been more than one case of this in the NY papers in recent years. I always think about the people who saw this and went home. Guess they read Bryan Caplan.
But I guess the same people were scandalized by the spectre that anyone could say a mean thing about Republicans. We don't hate! We don't talk to strangers but we don't hate!
In some ways I like the new name better. Just worry about my readers finding me. Please put the word out.
