No I'm Not Counting on McCain Comments Sinking Trump

A politico piece this morning warns that those who think Trump has finally gone too far and his attack on John McCain-'I like people who weren't captured. He finished at the bottom of his class. I'm very smart.-will finally shut him down are wrong.

I couldn't agree more. I am most certainly not assuming that this will be his 'Waterloo'-nor do I want it to be. To tell you the truth, when I read how mad the base sounds for this guy, I begin just for a moment to fantasize: Could it be that he does take the nomination?

That still is a real long shot-one way or another the GOP establishment would never let this happen, Still, the really believe that Trump is the Only True Conservative in the race:

"Interviews with his supporters in New Hampshire and the first drips of polling data suggest the mogul’s core constituency has no intention of abandoning him over the dust-up.

“I don’t like McCain anyways, to be perfectly frank with you,” said Jerry DeLemus, a Marine Corps veteran and Republican activist in New Hampshire. DeLemus said he was a supporter of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz before formally signing on to support Trump on Sunday."

"He said Trump’s comments the day before — “He’s not a war hero,” said Trump of McCain at a gathering of religious conservatives in Iowa, adding, “He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured” — do nothing to shake his support and that it’s McCain who should have to answer for his treatment of veterans."

“You think about [McCain] calling all the supporters of Trump ‘crazies,’” said DeLemus. “How many of those guys are veterans? Trump didn’t insult veterans. He went after McCain.”

"DeLemus called the party establishment’s outrage “disingenuous,” given its support for the dubious claims made by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a group that claimed Kerry did not deserve his military accolades, which include the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and three Purple Heart medals, when he ran for president against George W. Bush in 2004."

Of course, that reference to Kerry in 2004 is dead on. This is the problem with the GOP-it's record is so poor it's very difficult for it to suddenly wrap itself in playing the high road.

Again, as we noted a few days ago the modern GOP is built on a kind of tension. There are public utterances and private comparisons.

Usually, skillful GOP politicians know how this dance works. Certain things are not fit for public consumption. You know, you don't say that Mexicans are all subhuman vermin who smell funny, you say you believe very strongly in immigration reform and want to vote for it as soon as the border is secure.

In truth the 2 comments amount to the same thing. However, the latter way is the way you put it in mixed company-ie, in front of the mainstream public. What's happened with Trump is that the lines between public utterance and private confession have blurred.

This is causing the GOP establishment heartburn. But why is the system breaking down here? The base if very frustrated right now:

"However, why is this happening? The modern GOP is based on having the intelligence and the discipline to know what is meant for public consumption and what is meant for private. I think what's happened is the Tea Party base is incredibly frustrated by the defeats in the SJC, Obama's executive actions, etc."

"They thought after their 'wave election' last November that Obama was the lamest of lame ducks and it's turns out that he's anything but."

So GOP frustration is what is causing this breakdown. Everything here is sort of reinforcing itself. Again, I don't think he gets the nomination but the longer this goes on the better.

In 2012 liberals were able to coalesce behind demanding Mitt Romney show us his tax returns. His lack of responsiveness was a boon as it made you wonder what he was hiding that made this slow burn preferable.

Then there was the 47% video. This time we have ultimate Trump card in The Donald. All one has to say to the GOP now are the 2 words Donald Trump. He is not out of the party's mainstream in what he says-just in how he says it.
