San Bernadino Takes Colorado Springs off the Front Page

Talk about becoming depressingly familiar. The attack on Planned Parenthood in Colorado last Friday already becomes old news.

"Officials are responding to a shooting with as many as 20 victims at the Inland Regional Center San Bernardino, California, the fire department said Wednesday. The scene remains active, and police confirmed there are fatalities.

"ABC7 reported up to 12 people are dead in the shooting, but authorities have not yet publicly confirmed any fatalities. Multiple early reports said police were seeking one to three gunmen, possibly wearing body armor and heavily armed."

"The Los Angeles Times reported police used a robot to detonate a suspicious device left after the suspects fled the scene in an SUV. San Bernardino Police spokeswoman Vicki Cervantes confirmed to the paper that "there are fatalities," but did not offer a number."

"A local crime journalist reported confirmation from the fire department that there are 20 to 25 victims. It was unclear if there were any fatalities."

"MSNBC was broadcasting live affiliate footage of victims receiving medical attention while lying on the ground and hunched over cars. Federal agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were also at the scene."

"President Obama was briefed on the shooting."

"The Inland Regional Center, located at 1365 S. Waterman Ave., serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The center has have nearly 670 staffers to provide services for more than 30,200 people with developmental disabilities and their families, according to the center's Facebook page."

"Loma Linda University Medical Center, a nearby emergency room, was in "disaster mode" preparing for shooting victims to be transported, ABC7 reported."

Witnesses near the scene tweeted about a police SWAT team responding to evacuate people."

Reportedly there is a Planned Parenthood down the street from this site as well-though there's no reason to believe PP was a target like it was Friday.

But this sure didn't take long did it?

Yet this won't change anything politically. There was no political will to do anything after Friday and there will be none this time. It's a shame, Let's pray about it and get back to Starbucks.

Bernie will again say 'Let's stop the shouting' the GOP will do nothing, the NRA will oppose anything.

It couldn't be more striking the difference between the reaction fo foreign and domestic terrorism. When there is foreign terrorism-even if we aren't the victims we have to do something even if the action is pointless or even counterproductive.

http://lastmenandovermen.blogspot.com/2015/12/is-congress-having-second-thoughts-on.html

After Paris Congress took some counterproductive actions. Now maybe they are rethinking it and that's good. But note how Congress did nothing in response to Friday.

After all, the GOP Congress shares Richard Dear's hatred of abortion. Today the Federalist has a post that basically justifies what Dear did.

http://thefederalist.com/2015/11/30/the-irony-of-planned-parenthood-condemning-murder/

The claim of this piece is that it's 'ironic' for PP to talk of 'murder''get it they murder every day. The author is essentially justifying Dear's actions then.

If those who provide abortions are murderers then Dear was justified, a martyr for Justice.

There likely will be no Congressional response to this shooting either. What it comes down to is foreign terrorism is taken much more seriously than the domestic version though that's the more palpable threat for Americans.

The number we have lost to domestic terrorism or mass shootings dwarfs those Americans dead to the foreign version post 9/11.

It's why President Obama's call for voting single issue on guns ought to be taken to heart.

  1. Considering the target of this attack and that there were three shooters with body armor... I'm having a hard time guessing what the motivation might be in this case. This is just extremely weird. Not a lone wolf (if these early reports are correct) and not PP as a target, not a government building, police station, movie theater, or obvious gang related target or a bank or a post office. WTF?

    Another revolting development.

    1. ... and not a school or biker bar. I'm really scratching my head on this one.

    2. The fact that they didn't stick around and shoot it out to the death w/ police, and eventually blow themselves up with suicide vests makes me think it's not Islamic terrorists... or maybe they're on their way to the next target. Sickening.

  2. Yes I was scornful about PP but this time there the media really is unclear till they find out more.

One theory-no more than that-is it was escaped patients? After all a number of these shootings are by definition people with some mental issues.

Not that I want to stigmatize all the mentally ill. But it stands to reason.

  3. Just last night I heard (on Hardball) Rick Santorum essentially repeating the "more guns solves it" meme. Chris pressed him on "even in saloons? Booz and guns don't mix." Santorum wouldn't say they didn't! He basically said "people don't all go to bars to get drunk. Armed people would prevent shootings"... Chris was incredulous.

He should have Rick back on and ask him "Should we arm the mentally ill to prevent shootings like this?"

  4. Mike, elsewhere I left a comment for you about Trump edging closer and closer to Alex Jones, the penultimate conspiracy fruitcake.

Ideal outcome here: Trump goes full Jones and starts to call these shootings "false flag events."

The sad part (and this is real) is that WILL have the effect of making Jones more credible (low-info people will probably reason: a presidential front runner says Jones is right, so maybe he is). But overall, it will be more rivets in the GOP coffin, sealing them into their fact free fantasy world.

  5. Though this is not really Trump's kind of conspiracy theory. He really is kind of liberal in some things and this is not the kind of thing he'd come by naturally though he might be willing to pander if he thought it helped him.

He can be reasonable on certain things like Planned Parenthood and the Iran Deal.

Here too he's realistic and isn't getting on the impeach Obama train,

He's not stupid. Indeed as Roberts suggested he sort of knows some of his stuff is off the wall but what the hell.

    1. Maybe you're right... but if we have one domestic terror shooting a month between now and Nov 2016, the pressure on the GOP candidate/nominee to "explain" it in a way that appeals to the base might force him into "false flag" territory... which I think would be IDEAL... because then the floodgates open: Moon landings were a hoax, Rothchilds (i.e. "the Jews") control banking & the Fed, chemtrails, FEMA camps, Jade Helm, "blood moons," vaccines cause autism (whoops! Trump already went there)... the whole nine yards. That would be maximal damage to the GOP brand in my estimation.

    2. I just wish I could be so optimistic. LOL. I mean we have had two within 4 days of each other. Ok, some will quible we don't know if this latest was a domestic terrorism-which has a political agenda-or 'just a mass shooting'

We are averaging roughly a mass shooting a a week-more like a day, if you define it as the experts do-a mass shooting is with at least 4 shot and 1 killed.

I hate to say it but the GOP seems totally impervious to facts about gun violence.

    3. This CNN headline explains the appeal of false flag conspiracy theories:

"Obama calls for gun reforms in wake of San Bernardino shooting"

Obama's trying to take our guns away!!!!

I could easily see that being a Trump rallying cry. Maybe he could promise to have the "foreign traitor & gun snatcher" Obama put on trial for mass murder and treason after he's elected. I can practically hear the wild enthusiastic cheering already! Maybe he can promise to put Michelle up on charges too for "tampering with America's food." Lol.

    4. My three fundy half-siblings live near San Bernardino. One of them is anti-gun (although she bought one after her house was broken into while she was inside), but she's not very political either. The other two are more right wing conspiracy nuts... especially my half bro (who's also a bigger gun nut than I am: in fact I partially owe my gun nuttery to him). Almost guaranteed this will come up at our pre-Xmas get together this year. It'll be interesting to hear how this is all Obama's and/or Hillary's fault.

    5. Mike, I'm a moron: the one relative of mine who's ever actually held public office (city council member of Banning) is my "non-political" sister. Lol. I guess I think of her as non-political because she's not a right wing nut (or a political nut of any variety).

Later she worked for the city of San Bernardino. My dad just told me she got an award of some kind for her performace, and he was there for the ceremony... and he met the mayor of San Bernardino at the time: Judith Valles.

    6. Awesome. LOL. Your relative sounds great-is she single? LOL.

    7. Not that I'm by any means looking to get hitched or anything like that. But I like a smart, accomplished woman. LOL

    8. But then you're talking to someone who literally finds Hillary Clinton very sexy-now more than ever.

Something about a woman of power I guess and they don't come any more powerful than her!

    9. Yes, she's single. Lol. Her husband died a few years ago. She's a fundy though!... gotta warn you about that. But of my three half siblings, she's my favorite. :^)

  6. I don't know. It doesn't sound like Trump's kind of deal. Like he ruled out impeachment for Obama.

Trump has his conspiracy theories but this doesn''t sound like one of them. He isn't Alex Jones. LOL

  7. Mike, it's too bad Fox News isn't hosting the next GOP debate. I can only imagine the questions on this:

"Candidate X: How do you propose to go about eliminating these stupid liberal "gun-free zones" so that these awful mass shooting can finally be stopped?!?!"

    1. Maybe it's not too late for them to insist all the moderators be NRA officers. Wasn't Trump going to skip the next debate unless the news org give $5 million to his favorite charities? Well, maybe he can instead strong arm them into selecting NRA-only moderators.

      Delete
    2. Better still, the candidates should insist that CNN *IMMEDIATELY* stop shilling for King Obama's false flag mass shootings! Maybe they can organize a joint press conference tonight.

    3. Either case, it's high time for the GOP to go on the OFFENSIVE... time to GET MAD!!!! Mad at the liberal media simultaneously hyping these false flag shooting conspiracies, and to get mad at America's remaining liberal gun laws which (in the rare case of a non false flag shooting), are clearly preventing freedom loving Americans from defending themselves. It's time to dispense with this namby pamby "praying for" the victims. Most of those so-called "victims" clearly hate freedom, because they didn't arm themselves and return fire (that is in the extremely unlikely case it's not a false flag event, of course).

I want to see Ted Cruz come out swinging about all the Democratic killers that go unreported at this next press conference. I want him to whine like a little girl (playing victim) about how the big bad mean MSM will claim that all these shooters are Republicans who "love freedom and Jesus." He should preempt any questions they have with his loud angry complaints and angry denunciations. Same goes for all the rest of the candidates.

    4. ... also they should blame the "break down of the family," abortion, Obamacare, contraception, atheists, lack of prayer in school, the "liberal War against Christianity, ... and Christmas," sharia law, secularism, pornography, homosexuality, evolution, fiat money, runaway inflation, immigration, the global warming hoax, and of course Starbuck's so-called "holiday cups."

    1. I'm in Goleta (near Santa Barbara) 158 miles away.... with a great big traffic snarled city between (I hate driving over there for our pre-Xmas get together... usually traffic is unavoidable).

My half bro used to live in Redlands. I guess one of the suspects (or two) used to live there.

    2. My hometown (where my dad lives still) is about a mile or two from the San Bernardino county line (NW corner)... of course, it's a huge county! From Wikipedia:

"With an area of 20,105 square miles, San Bernardino County is the largest county in the United States by area, although some of Alaska's boroughs and census areas are larger. It is larger than each of the nine smallest states, larger than the four smallest states combined, and larger than 71 different sovereign nations."

I looked that up, because I thought I'd heard it was the "largest county" as a kid but I wanted to make sure I wasn't hallucinating.

Somewhere (probably MSNBC) I heard recently that CA governor Ronald Reagan, with the political help of the NRA at the time, signed into a law an anti-open carry law. Of course the motivation at the time was that the prospect of armed black people walking around was too terrible to contemplate. (or so I heard). I can't vouch for any details!

    3. Tom not to toot my own horn but you heard that fact about Reagan and open carry right from here buddy!

    4. Wow. So San Berandino is big. I was wondering if the shooting happened close to you or your Dad. I guess not.

    5. Lol!... great. Then I don't feel bad about not looking up any details on that. ;^)

    8. I have a funny "open carry" story for you... back in 1999, when I went on a gun buying frenzy (because I knew all the guns I'd ever be interested in owning would soon be illegal to sell in CA), my 1st purchase was of a civilian "MAK-90" (essentially a civilian AK-47). It was used, imported from China, and relatively cheap. There was a 10 day waiting period. When I went to pick it up I didn't bring a case with me (I thought it would come with one). Instead they just handed the thing to me... and I walked out the door (feeling very self conscious) "open carrying" the thing across the busiest street in Santa Barbara (State St) to my car. SB isn't a huge town, but it's a tourist town with lots of shops and crowds going up and down State St, especially on the weekends. Lol... of course "way back then" mass shootings weren't a weekly occurrence.

    9. ... that kind of thing might go down just fine in San Antonio Texas, but in all my years here in Santa Barbara / Goleta (pretty much continuously since 1984), I have not once seen anybody walking down ANY street, let along State Street (amogst throngs of window shopping tourists) armed with any kind of firearm, pellet gun, or bow and arrow, (outside of law enforcement of course), let alone an AK-47. I recall trying to hide the thing as best I could against the side of my body so as not to draw undo attention to myself as I walked across State St. in front of the stopped cars at the light. Fortunately my car wasn't too far away. I was probably violating Reagan's law!... and just lucked out that no cop happened to be passing by. Yep, not a smart move!

    10. Well at least luck was on your side. LOL.
