A Defeat for the EU a Victory for the European Idea

How appropriate that independence day for the Greeks comes just a day after ours:

I agree with the Greek finance minister: this is a victory for a democratic Europe-how appropriate coming from Greece-the birthplace of Western democracy!

Krugman is right-this is a victory for the European idea:

"Tsipras and Syriza have won big in the referendum, strengthening their hand for whatever comes next. But they’re not the only winners: I would argue that Europe, and the European idea, just won big — at least in the sense of dodging a bullet."

"I know that’s not how most people see it. But think of it this way: we have just witnessed Greece stand up to a truly vile campaign of bullying and intimidation, an attempt to scare the Greek public, not just into accepting creditor demands, but into getting rid of their government. It was a shameful moment in modern European history, and would have set a truly ugly precedent if it had succeeded."

He's right-this whole campaign from the standpoint of the EU has been about trying to get rid of Tsipras for the previous government status quo-that the Greeks had voted out in January. As to this being an aberration-the EU has by definition been an anti-democratic project. The original sin was thinking you can have a monetary without a fiscal union.
I don't get this idea that Tsipras and his party don't know what they're doing.

"But it didn’t. You don’t have to love Syriza, or believe that they know what they’re doing — it’s not clear that they do, although the troika has been even worse — to believe that European institutions have just been saved from their own worst instincts. If Greece had been forced into line by financial fear mongering, Europe would have sinned in a way that would sully its reputation for generations. Instead, it’s something we can, perhaps, eventually regard as an aberration."

If Syrzia doesn't know what they're doing but the trokia have been worse than for all intents and purposes-Syrzia on a relative basis knows what it's doing. I think that's right. LOL

Seriously, I think that they knew what they were doing here as this is the best possible outcome from their standpoint.

Their chance of getting a good deal or at least a deal less terrible than the deal they just voted down has never been better.
