Prayers are not Enough

So the Dems are telling the GOPers in Congress and you can't deny it. Moment of silence are nice. More important are moments of action if we are to prevent more mass shootings-right now we have more such than days of the year in 2015.

As bad as San Bernadino was, it wasn't even the only mass shooting of the day.

Then again, this is only gun violence that reaches the definition of a 'mass shooting'-usually defined as at least 4 people shot.

What about all the 'non-mass shootings' that are seen as normal in many crime ridden, urban areas?

California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff:

"Democrats to GOP: Prayers are not enough."

'I would much rather have moments of action than moments of silence,' Rep. Schiff says about the latest mass shooting."

"Democrats are scolding their Republican colleagues for not backing up their calls for “thoughts and prayers” with real action that could curb the gun violence plaguing the United States."

"As Americans are still trying to make sense of Wednesday’s massacre in San Bernardino, California, that killed 14 and injured 17, Democratic voices are saying enough with the platitudes."

"Appearing on CNN's “New Day” on Thursday morning, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said he is through with moments of silence, noting that he had just been part of a moment of silence on the House floor mere days ago after a gunman opened fire at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado, that killed three last Friday."

“This has become a ritual in the House. I would much rather have moments of action than moments of silence on the House floor,” Schiff said.

“Your ‘thoughts’ should be about steps to take to stop this carnage. Your “prayers” should be for forgiveness if you do nothing — again,” tweeted Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Wednesday. Murphy’s home state is approaching the three-year anniversary of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown."

"As the situation unfolded thousands of miles away in California, Connecticut’s other Democratic senator, Richard Blumenthal, tweeted that “Congress is effectively complicit for its inaction.”

Hey, you want some God Talk? Here it is: Amen to Blumenthal, Murphy, and Schiff. And, Amen to the Daily News, a paper, that as a New Yorker I have read many times, but for which I've never been prouder than today:

“GOD ISN'T FIXING THIS,” the New York Daily News’ front page blared Thursday, featuring tweets from Republicans, including House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and presidential candidates Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Ted Cruz of Texas and Rand Paul of Kentucky."

Tom Brown-there's your incremental positive change in the media. But note what it is: a moment where a paper decided to take sides not hide beyond bloodless neutrality.

The Very Serious Pundits can extol objective journalism as much as they like-but the truth isn't objective. You have to sometimes be willing to take its side.

And this headline is speaking volumes. It's controversial but good. We want a discussion.

The headline says, "God Isn't Fixing This."

"As latest batch of innocent Americans are left lying in pools of blood, cowards who could truly end gun scourge continue to hide behind meaningless platitudes," the cover reads.

God isn't fixing this. This deserves to become the gun control slogan.

  1. I like the slogan. I don't know if you touched on this somewhere else or not, but there was a "lesser" mass shooting yesterday in Georgia:

    1. Yes, I see you did (above). Well, there's a direct link anyway.

    2. This will sound sick, but I can see an SNL skit that has a national "mass shooting registry" ... where you go online to reserve a day for your mass shooting so you don't inadvertently make the blunder of scheduling it for a day when it will be overshadowed by a bigger event.

Maybe that's one of the things they help out with on the ISIS terrorist hot line (that I saw Trevor Noah make fun of): that's a hotline FOR terrorists... to call in with questions about suicide belts and such I guess.

  3. O/T: Mike, you should check out how the Washington Post (Rubin & others) are reporting about the Republican Jewish Coalition (which all 14 GOP candidate apparently attended).

Trump: received boos for not saying Jerusalem belongs 100% to Israel
Cruz: received uncomfortable silences for his lack of a war footing
Rubio: "Hit it out of the park!" (Rubin)

Lol... so the establishment thinks that this is where they'll strike back? Because Trump and Cruz are "insufficient panderers" to ~1% of the electorate (my guess for the size of the Republican Jewish vote). Rubin has about four articles on this one event between yesterday and today.
