Others have been fired for less. Don Imus lost his job despite his storied career over at MSNBC for one comment. While Rush is trying to make it like he just uttered a couple of ill-chosen words, the fact is that Imus saw his career literally destroyed over literally two words.
Yet what Rush has done here is more blameworthy. While Imus immediately was apologetic when he realized that many people felt hurt by his attempt at humor, Limbaugh for two straight days doubled down. Only when it became clear that this time he may have really done it this time did he offer up some attempt at apology.
Think about it-if a big kid picks on a little kid and the little kid starts crying it makes a big difference whether he immediately stops when he sees he hurt him or even apologizes or if he like Rush sees the pain and so really gets off on it now and won't let it go. The kid who steps back made an honest mistake. The Rush Limbaugh kid is a bully just like Rush.
And of course Rush has done a lot more than use a couple of wrong words. He has made a career of insulting women and blacks. He thinks he's very cute. Even here he said much more than a couple of wrong words like when he said a misogynist is a man who hates women almost as much as women do. Gee, Rush, how did you manage so many failed marriages with this attitude?
Besides Imus we have the specter of Glen Beck who got let go by Fox News-yes, AKA Fix News itself-after his viscous talk about President Obama having a "deep seated hatred of white people."
Then there's the conservative talk show host Jay Severin, whose New England area show ended after Jay expanded one too many times about how as a boss he slept with all the women who worked for him.
If Fix News will let go of Glen Beck when the advertising starts to dry up as it is now for Rush, this should disabuse Rush's brave attempt at spin by claiming the show's 'not about advertisers it's about you." I thought Republicans like Rush are supposed to understand the private sector? If there are no advertisers there is now show.
Rush also tried to say that there's no bid deal in losing a bunch of advertisers, he'll just get new ones. Sure, how many advertisers does Rush actually think don't know about his repulsive comments by now? What will happen is that his pool of possible replacements will shrink the more it becomes clear that Rush Limbaugh has become toxic for any decent brand.
Right now the beat goes on and it doesn't look good:
"As of Tuesday afternoon, at least 29 advertisers had said they would exclude, suspend, or pull their business from Limbaugh's radio show, which is syndicated by Premiere Radio, a division of Clear Channel Communications."
He's also already lost a couple of radio affiliates. This is pretty early in the game. Anyone trying to claim this is it, and Rush need not worry should just refer again to the demise of Glenn Beck. If Fox News of all places can fire Glenn Beck no Right wing hack is safe.
