Thoughts on Today's Republican Primaries

My main thoughts about the two Republican primaries is go Santorum go1 At the moment the polls indicate a very tight three man race in each of them though with Romney up by 1 in Alabama and Newt up by a few in Mississippi

Santorum has, however, gone ahead again on the national Republican polls. Gingrich has been doing well in the South which is Gingrich Country. Still a Gingrich sweep is second best to a Santorum sweep. The goal is to either beat Romney or drag out the time till he wins as long as possible.

On the other hand it can be argued that if Romney wins both Deep South states, he essentially cinches it:

"I think it’s over if he wins here,” said Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant of Romney after a Monday rally with comedian Jeff Foxworthy at a trucking company outside Jackson. “At that point how do you go and say, ‘I’m the most conservative candidate’ if you can’t win the most conservative state in the country?”

Or what happens if Newt wins?

“If Newt wins them, he’s still in the race but he doesn’t eliminate Santorum,” said Alabama GOP Chairman Bill Armistead, explaining the two most likely outcomes following a candidate forum at the historic Alabama Theater in Birmingham Monday night. “If [Romney] wins both of them, he’d be very hard to beat — he’ll be on track at that point.”

Of course, Newt and Santorum have both claimed they won't get out no matter what happens today. Just anyone but Romney. And the fact is that Romney really doesn't deserve the Republican nomination. The GOP is opposed more than anything to "ObamaCare" and the individual mandate. Yet in 2009 it turns out Romney endorsed it-not just what he's saying now which is that somehow the individual mandate is acceptable in Massachusetts but no nationally, but in the federal form it's in now. At the time he praised Obama for looking at "what we did in Massachusetts."

  1. Could you seriously imagine though, what it would be like if Santorum DID actually win...scary

  2. Maybe I'm reckless and foolhardy but I don't see that happening. No way would the independents vote for him. He's the perfect opponent.
