Joe Walsh: No Need Anymore For Exception For Life of the Mother

While the Romney team is desperate to find a way to reassure just enough women that he's no werewolf-ie, he's hoping to trick just enough women-the GOP is again reminding us where the gender gap comes from in the first place.

"Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) had a Todd Akin moment of his very own Thursday night when he said “advances in science and technology” have eliminated risks for pregnant mothers and therefore done away with the need for abortion exceptions."

“There’s no such exception as life of the mother,” Walsh said after a debate with Democratic challenger Tammy Duckworth in Chicago. “And as far as health of the mother, same thing. With advances in science and technology, health of the mother has become a tool for abortions any time, under any reason.”

"Asked if he believes there is never a medical need to perform an abortion to save a mother’s life, Walsh said, “Absolutely.”

That Walsh should have his own Todd Akin moment is not so surprising when you remember that Walsh had defended Akin's own "scientific" comments on abortion. These guys just can't help themselves.

Walsh has had his share of Akin moments already-though not all about abortion like when he attacked his opponent, Iraqi veteran Tammy Duckworth, suggesting her heroism is "no big deal"-that's how she lost her legs in Iraq-or at least that she talked about it too much. Perhaps all these Akin moments have something to do with why he trails her 52-38.

"After Akin’s comment, however, Walsh came to the embattled Senate candidate’s defense. While he labeled Akin’s comments “offensive, insulting and wrong,” Walsh said he was troubled by their fellow Republicans piling on. “And I’m bothered by the silence of members of our own party to stand up for him.”

So Akin's comments about women not being able to become pregnant after rape was offensive, insulting, and wrong but his claim that somehow modern technology means you would never have to perform an abortion to save a woman's life isn't? I mean more than anything it's at least as wrong as what Akin says-which was pretty wrong.
