Paul Ryan: We Started Out Winning Medicare Debate

I love this. We were winning it, that's what counts. In truth, he's correct. In the first month after his nomination, the GOP's strategy-the RSCC had written out notes on how GOPers should discuss it!-was working.

Prior to the conventions, Obama and Romney drew dead even on who would better handle Medicare. This was according the GOP plan. They new they couldn't win the debate outright, their goal was simply to create enough ambiguity and confusion to break even. The goal was literally to "fight Medicare to a tie" and then go back on offense.

They did this by declaring, "First of all, no President has ever cut Medicare except the President who cut it $716 billion to fund his ObamaCare."

So it was working. What was particularly galling is that the Ryan plan itself was very unpopular. However, a decent number of people actually thought the Ryan plan was the President's. While this was frustrating, it was also hopeful as it also meant that the Dems just had to inform the voters of the truth.

This has happened as the President now leads decisively on the question of Medicare and Ryan was booed a few weeks ago at a speech to AARP. One woman called out "lie!" another yelled"liar!"

"Paul Ryan told Wisconsin radio host Charles Sykes Monday that when he joined the GOP ticket as Mitt Romney's running mate, he and Romney were "winning" the Medicare debate. But he said President Obama has put up ads "literally telling falsehoods" about his Medicare plan."

We saw more unconscious irony out of the Romney campaign-Ryan accusing anyone of telling falsehoods.

The take home is that the Democrats have done their jobs. Another thing they achieved at this very successful convention was to shift the ground on the economy. Romney's lead on the economy has vanished.
