Ryan-not Romney- is Who They're in Tampa to See

Nobody likes Mitt. No one. Not the British-we remember what happened there. Americans don't much like him, the Arabs hate him, even the Economist doesn't like him.

It turns out that even the Tea Partiers don't much like him. Ryan they like. Again, in case there is any doubt. this is why he nominated Ryan-for the base, don't let the David Brooks media tell you it was for the independents.

No. Ryan was desperation, a Hail Mary, yet another Game Changer. John McCain without the slightest irony, immediately gave Romney credit for "another Game Changer"-ie, he still now wants to defend Sara Palin.

And indeed, he's right. She was a Game Changer. That's the whole problem. The GOP always seems to need a Game Changer now a days. Why ever could that be? It can't indicate anything very good. This is American politics. Check the history books. When has the office of Vice President ever meant diddly?

When you have to get a Game Changer it means your campaign is floundering, basically you're hoping that they will like your VP better than they like you.

Palin was also much more beloved by the base than her boss. So it is that Romney's friends tell us approvingly that Ryan gives him "energy" that he likes it better being with him than out there alone on the campaign trail.

Does this sound like an Iron Man to you? Someone who is supposed to give us credibility as a world leader? I mean should we send him a blanky as well-will that give him back some energy?

No wonder the British clowned him-and the British our are bitch. Some conservative talking head wondered if the Brits aren't taking a risk mocking Romney so badly he could be the next President of the United States. I look at it the other way around. What they are saying is we Brits know this man will never be President of the United States, if he had a snowball's chance in hell we would be our usual respectful British selves.

By the way when I say Britain is our bitch-and I myself was born in Britain, am indeed, still a Brit and an American-dual citizenship-a good movie to verify this is the one about Bill Clinton and Tony Blair-was the movie called The Special Relationship?

The beauty of it was that when the would meet Blair would say "Hello, Mr. President" and Clinton would respond "Hello, Tony."

Can you imagine Mitt Romney ever saying "Hello, David?" After the way David clowned him. of course not.

It's a tell-Cameron did it as he knows it will never happen. It's like the Economist puts it The American people will not vote for this man, neither for that matter would this newspaper.

“Is Mitt Romney Ronald Reagan? No. But he’s alive, and he’s a safe alternative to Obama. I’m confident he can lead the country,” said Maine delegate Stavros Mendros. “He is delivering a stronger economic message, and I think people are starting to wake up. And Paul Ryan puts Wisconsin and Minnesota in play for us.”

"After dragging himself across the finish line following a bruising primary season, Romney spent the spring and most of this summer struggling to muster some passion within his own party for his candidacy. In the face of dismal economic news for Obama, Romney, nonetheless, failed to get out his own economic message — swamped instead by demands he release more tax returns and questions over whether he helped send jobs overseas while a principal at Bain Capital. In addition, poll after poll showed voters didn’t much like him personally."

"A revealing April focus group — conducted by Peter Hart for the Annenberg Public Policy Center — among a dozen likely Republican voters in the Tampa area indicated that even people who were staunchly anti-Obama were still looking for a reason to vote for Romney instead of staying home. “I would love to find out what the man really stands for. Without knowing that, because he doesn’t take a stand on anything firmly, I can’t vote for him,” said one retiree.

So Ryan was just to get the base excited. That's how bad it is. Large parts of the David Brooks media-you know people like Anderson Cooper and other purveyor's of vapid Centrism want us to believe it's more than this. But it was just for the base. You would hope that he had the base by now, but no.

And why should he have them? Just today on Fox News again, he actually had the gall to give his passage of ObamaCare in Massachusetts as a reason for women to vote for him while at the same time criticizing the President for passing the very same ObamaCare!

This fellow is truly pathological. He says he doesn't like getting on the couch. Pity, as he seriously needs help.

"But today, delegates are saying — and hoping — that perhaps likability is overrated after three years of high unemployment and slow housing starts. Romney, they will tell you, had a successful track record as an effective businessman, turned around the 2002 Olympics and served as governor as Massachusetts. They believe Ryan can go a long way in helping Romney articulate a stronger economic message and generate energy.

Ok, so Ryan will help Romney get some energy, they hope. Notice how they don't call his time as Governor of Massachusetts successful? He's supposed to be Mr. Fix It on the economy yet he was 47th in job creation in Massachusetts.

    More flawed premises.

"I like Mitt Romney OK, but I love Paul Ryan,” said a New York delegate and GOP activist that asked that her name not be used. “Ryan gave Romney the extra assist he needed — he’s really smart; he’s young; and he believes in something.” A moderate on social issues, this delegate said she didn’t care that Ryan and Romney are far to the right of her on social issues. “I might not agree with him on abortion, but I don’t vote for a president based on social issues. We need jobs.”

See, nobody loves Mitt Romney. But I don't get this delegate's premise-'I don't vote based for a President based on social issues'

Does she understand that as President Romney-Ryan have the power to sign laws on social issues like cutting back on your civil rights as a woman? I mean this is a strange idea-it's ok if he outlaws my uterus so long as he creates jobs. Maybe she thinks that's a fair trade but most women don't judging by the polls.

Again, though: on what basis do you know he can create jobs? He didn't in Massachusetts. Some people at this convention get it, however:

"But of course, even at political conventions, one can’t expect total unity. Outside a meeting room at the Hyatt downtown, where the Republican National Convention Rules Committee was gathering, some were not shy about voicing disappointment with the ticket."

“The Republican Party is not thinking about the big picture,” said Cynthia Kennedy, a Romney delegate from Nevada. “They have to attract disenchanted Democrats to win, and they’re not acting in a way to bring those folks in.” Furthermore, she noted, “a strong nominee needs to be opinionated and take stands — Mitt Romney does not. He does sing a moving rendition of ‘American the Beautiful.’”

"Jay Lake, a Ron Paul delegate from Nevada, said bluntly that he “does not believe this ticket can beat Obama.”

“Today, we may know what Mitt Romney stands for. But what is he going to stand for tomorrow?"

Oh my God Jake! That's got to be the line of the year! That is Romney's slogan. I'm going to use that one!
