Certainly Sanford, Florida is a strange little city.
"First they wanted him, then they didn’t, now they want him again. Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee tried to quit today, and failed."
.
That was the first piece of good judgment Lee had shown since this whole case started, Until now, he had allowed the man who killed Trayvon Martin to walk out of the police station with physical evidence on his body and the gun that had shot and killed Martin'
So let's see if we have this right. The Sanford City Commission voted 3-2 no confidence in him last month but now feels enough confidence that they refuse to let him resign? They don't trust him to run the police department for now but do trust him to continue to collect a paycheck?
Evidently this may have something to do with the City Manager, Norton Bonaparte.
" "The Sanford City Commission rejected his resignation in a 3-2 vote, with some officials deeming it the result of political pressure from City Manager Norton Bonaparte."
"City Manager Norton Bonaparte, Jr. and Chief Lee had reached an agreement which needed City Commission approval," stated a press release from city officials. "The Chief went on Administrative Leave status a month ago in an effort to aid in restoring calm to the City in the wake of protests surrounding the Trayvon Martin investigation."
"Lee will now remain on paid leave while the investigation continues into the death of the unarmed teenager, with Captain Darren Scott filling in as top cop."
"This comes on the same day Trayvon Martin's shooter, George Zimmerman, slipped out of jail on $150,000 bail as he awaits his second-degree murder trial."

Norton Bonaparte is a strange entity himself. When Laurence O'Donnell-who has been terrific on this from the beginning of this tragedy-questioned Bonaparte a month ago the City Manager at first had said something about waiting till the investigation was over to consider asking Lee to step down. However due to the public reaction to his shifty performance he reversed himself the next day and Lee immediately stepped down but not permanently.
Now Bonaparte may be the one who insists on allowing him to continue to collect a paycheck. Just who is Norton Bonaparte really and what is his agenda? Hopefully the good work of MSNBC people like O'Donnell, Al Sharpton and others will get to the bottom of this soon.
