The NFL Week 7: The Vegas Line vs. Massey-Peabody

In comparing the official Vegas Line with Massey-Peabody, there are a few differences- unlike Vegas, MP has the Jets over the Chargers, the Bucs over the Bears, and Houston over Tennessee. In two of these games, however, this is solely because of the significant advantage MP gives to home field advantage. Only in the case of Houston is it because they are actually the higher ranked team than their opponent.

The Jets, for example, are ranked only 16th with a power ranking of -0.08 while the Chargers are a respectable 10th with a power ranking of 2.11, but as MP gives 2.3 points to the home team the Jets win by the skin of their teeth-or are at least favored to win by the skin of their teeth. The same goes for Tampa who is only favored because of the home field; the Bears are ranked 18th compared with 22nd for the Bucs but at -1.57 the 2.3 home field points are enough to beat the Bears who have a -.80.

In addition MP isn't even distracted by wins and losses! So the fact that the top 3 teams in order are the Pats, Ravens, and then the Packers is not because of the stellar records of these teams though they are stellar.

An illustration of this is the Jets who upon beating Miami on Monday night has seen their ranking fall as a result because while a win was statistically ugly.
