Brett Farve: Not So Great

I've always been a Farve fan even though he really got tiresome the last few years of his "I'm retiring?I'm not retiring" farewell tour. Some in recent years have been critical of him and arguably he didn't know how to leave right Many players don't, like Tiki Barber.

The one thing that I knew about him that I didn't like very much was the way he is reported to have treated his backup-and now starQB-Aaron Rodgers. While he was the QB at Green Bay he was asked about Rodgers and he replied "It's not my job to train him."

This suggested an unworthy attitude. Still I tried not to hold it against him too much, after all nobody is perfect. It's understandable-if not so admirable-that he would take this attitude, after all Rodgers was his theoretical replacement. To be sure while for a franchise QB like Farve that might have seemed unlikely yet look what happened to Drew Bledsoe or even at the tail end of his career, Joe Montana.

However his latest input is a bit much. He tried to diminish Rodgers' accomplishments by saying that he already had a good cast, and yes the good fortune to learn from him(yes he actually went there) so actually he wonders what took Rodgers so long.

At this point Farve really ought to think about how he sounds. Clearly these ungenerous comments are due to his concern over his legacy-ie, insecurity. But as his legacy matters to him he ought to remember that his legacy is a matter of opinion and sentiment as well as hard. cold stats. True on the strength of his numbers he's a Hall of Famer. I certainly won't claim that this could hurt his chances. But for the public, an attitude like this may hurt his legacy.

The sad truth is that maybe his insecurity is understandable  After winning the Super Bowl in 1997, Farve's Packers never would win again though they did come close the next year losing 31-24 to Denver. Now Rodgers wins his third year and at 4-0 this year is a decent favorite to win again this year or in the future.

No one has questioned Farve's legacy. Maybe he should stop being so thin skinned before they do.
