You got to love it. The GOP just keeps stepping in it on these social issues. Yesterday Mitt Romney got himself all tied up in knots over the question of whether he is or is not vetting Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio.
First they weren't and got hit hard for it then Romney said only he and this one woman who works with him on it know anything about it then we got a report that Rubio had been vetted then we heard another source say that no, he hasn't been vetted, not really. Not in a serious way like Tim Pawlenty has been vetted.
As usual it's a chicken with its head cut off. It's bad enough that all Romney has done is kick Hispanic people in the teeth. Now it turns out that he doesn't take seriously the one major Hispanic Republican with a national following who Rush Limbaugh predicts "will one day be President."
Ironically now Rubio himself comes out and himself alienates the GOP from another group it does badly with-gays. Recently Romney caved on Richard Grenell as his foreign policy advisor after some social conservative groups got after him for hiring Grenell-who is gay.
Romney pushed Grenell out. Yes, I know technically Grenell "quit voluntarily" but anyone who wasn't born just yesterday knows very well that there's ways of making someone you don't want around quit. All kinds of ways. A very effective way used for Grenell was to leave him out of policy discussions-basically just freeze him out.
Now, Rubio himself as the Hispanic Republican who was supposed to help Romney bridge the divide with Hispanics has not only failed to do that-Obama checkmated the whole feeble GOP play here by his Executive Order last Friday-he's now actually doing more to alienate Romney with another minority group-gays.
"Mitt Romney’s campaign may or may not be vetting Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) for vice presidential consideration, but in the meantime, he continues to maintain space in the media spotlight. In an interview with Christianity Today published yesterday, he reiterated his opposition to same-sex marriage, pointing out that the Bible opposes it, as do all of the faiths (Catholic, Mormon, evangelical Christian) he’s experienced. Though he qualified his answer in some ways, he also suggested that society shouldn’t “tolerate” less-than-”ideal” family structures."
Specifically Rubio said this:
"In terms of the Bible’s interpretation of marriage, what our faith teaches is pretty straightforward. There’s not much debate about that. The debate is about what society should tolerate, and what society should allow our laws to be. I believe marriage is a unique and specific institution that is the result of thousands of years of wisdom, which concluded that the ideal — not the only way but certainly the ideal — situation to raise children to become productive and healthy humans is in a home with a father and mother married to each other. Does that mean people who are not in that circumstance cannot be successful? Of course not."
"It’s not a discriminatory thing. I’m not angry at anyone because of it, but I also have to be honest about what I believe marriage should be in our laws."
"In May, Rubio broke from Romney on the issue, coming out against a Federal Marriage Amendment — a resolution of his past “mixed feelings.” He told Fox News’ Neil Cavuto that the regulation of marriage should be left to the states."

As usual whether your talking about gays, Hispanics, or women, or the concerns of most Americans, the GOP just doesn't get it. But I love this-Rubio manages to mess things with two groups-Hispanics and gays.
