I've written a good deal about this the last day or so and the reason is that I want it to be very clear what's really going on over in the House right now with Darrell Issa's witch hunt against the President and his attorney general Eric Holder.

Unquestionably it's a fishing expedition where Issa and friends is trying to throw as much muck against the wall and see what will stick. Up till now if two years very little has, indeed, Fast and Furious is the first thing that has had any staying power.
However, even more importantly, understand that this is just one act in a far larger project, it's the very same Vast Right Wing Conspiracy that Hillary Clinton had spoken about 15 years ago. I was just reading some of Bill Press' excellent recent book "The Obama Hate Machine: The Lies, Distortions, and Personal Attacks Against the President and Who's Behind Them"
http://www.amazon.com/The-Obama-Hate-Machine-President---/dp/0312641648/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1340394788&sr=8-2&keywords=the+fox+effect#_
It's a must read to really have a proper context for what's going on with Issa. Indeed, Press argues that the personal nature of the attack on the President, it's shear visceral bile hasn't been seen since the attacks on Abraham Lincoln.
I admit, on first glance I found that hard to believe. The thing is, the Clinton 90s weren't so long ago, and I remember them well. It's hard to beat the Clinton haters in terms of just pure visceral bile, of an absolute determination to destroy the President politically and personally by any means necessary.
How can anything be worse than the Clinton haters? Indeed what strikes me is that until now at least the Obama Administration has been able to function totally normally. I remember the Clinton years and from day one there was no honeymoon. Every single day of his Presidency he was under siege.
Every day the papers were abuzz with a new pseudo scandal. The Obama Administration really hasn't been. However, Press does acknowledge this. One big difference was that Clinton did have a lot of smoke-the smoking gun was that he was a serial adulterer in his personal life which meant there was always smoke. Then again the media was different then.
This was before the Internet got as big as it now has. The Right got it's message across largely through talk radio. This was before liberals and Democrats really had their own alternative media and before the rise of the blogosphere both Left and Right. So Rush Limbaugh and company were big fish in a small pond.
Back then if you desired commentary beyond just mainstream press reports Right wing radio was the main resource-liberals weren't able to get much of a foothold in talk radio. This has changed somewhat on terrestrial radio since but the main difference is the rise of so much alternative media on the Internet-including Internet Radio.
Because of a new landscape and because the Obama Administration has been pretty resourceful-and quite honestly because Obama unlike Clinton is squeaky clean- up until now he hasn't been under the perpetual siege that Clinton was.
Much of the worst slurs and slanders against this President have not gotten the wide currency that they did against Clinton. However, when Press claims that Obama has been the victim of worse personal animus than Clinton would he means is the level of organized anti Obama bile and propaganda coming from first and foremost the Koch Brothers.
Press compares them to Richard Mellon Scaife in the 90s who funded the Arkansas Project that was there to dig up as much dirt on Clinton as possible to see what stuck. In terms of level of funding and organization, the Koch Brothers dwarf Scaife. And as Press shows the Obama Hate Machine got started before he even started running for President.
Basically in the 90s Scaife had millions to contribute to destroying Clinton, but the Koch Brothers have billions to do the same to Obama.
Indeed, one thing that amazes me is how people now can claim that Obama should have "done a Clinton." There are people now who seem to remember the 90s as a simpler more bipartisan time. Nothing could be further form the truth! In the 90s they were out not to debate Clinton least of all on matters of policy, they weren't even out to just beat him politically, they were out to destroy him politically and personally.
They did not work with Clinton anymore than the current class of Repugs works with Obama. In fact there are a lot of parallels between what happened to Clinton in 1994 and Obama in 2010. Both suffered a "shellacking" largely because they were sandbagged in the first two years.
ObamaCare-aka RomneyCare.
They know only one thing and that is the defeat and destruction of the Democratic President at all costs. Indeed, the similarities between Clinton and Obama are striking.
Both won elections by winning a more than two to one edge in the electoral college with margins of close or more than 200 electoral votes. Both came into their first terms with strong Democrat majorities and yes a determination to do something finally about the pressing problem of health care insurance where millions of Americans are uninsured.
Both wrongly thought they could work with Republicans. Indeed, Obama tried to "do a Clinton" in 2011 with the debt ceiling deal. Indeed, Bohner and Mitch McConnell even agreed to the Grand Bargain in private with Obama at the Oval Office. However their second in commands-Jon Kyle in the Senate but especially Eric Cantor in the House killed it.
So that was his Clinton. But what is obscured by all this is that Clinton himself never got any GOP cooperation finishing with all the crazy Congressional investigations into Vince Foster, Whitewater, Lewinskygate, Troopergate, finishing finally with a totally frivolous party line vote for impeachment. As for the budget deficit it's forgotten that Clinton passed his deficit reduction package in 1993 without a single Republican vote.
If there is a lost era of bipartisanship it wasn't the 90s. Indeed, if anything the real lesson of the Clinton years for Obama should have been-and maybe the next Democratic President will be ready-is that there is no working with the Republicans. Not in this day and age. This is a group of people who understand only destruction of the other side. It was different once. In the 30s the Republicans felt that they may not have loved the New Deal but that they had to at least let FDR try. There was some concern for the country not just the fortunes of the Republican Party.
In the 60s as much as the conservatives hated the Kennedy-Johnson policy agenda with it's civil rights and War on Poverty they didn't go after them personally-after all both men were like Clinton serial philanderers who had "caused much pain" in their marriages. Today anything is fair game. Again, Obama is relatively lucky in that he is a squeaky clean family man.
This hasn't stopped them from trying to demonize him but there's simply no smoke in the sexual area which for them is a pity as this is so easy to capture the imagination with. Any Democrat who enters the White House should be on notice. There are powerfully funded interests that seek your destruction. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.
There are a lot of liberals now who think that maybe Hillary would have been better. I was originally a Hillary man but I consider this to be a red herring. For those who think she would have been more liberal are certainly barking up the wrong tree. She ran to Obama's Right during the primary.
If anything, the one case you can make is that maybe a President Hillary Clinton would have been more battle ready for the coming Right wing Hate Machine. Who is more battle tested than she having lived for 8 years as its focus? It's possible then she might have been better ready for the fight. At least they probably wouldn't have had the element of surprise they had with Obama.
If you go back to January 2009, Boehner had claimed that he believed the President was willing to work with Republicans and he invited the President to a meeting with the GOP House. It was one of those invitations that aren't necessarily intended to be accepted. However, when Obama did accept Boehner instructed his 178 fellow House Republicans not to negotiate and not to accept any deal the President proposes.
It may well be the case that some of the affection the GOP expresses now a days towards Clinton is legitimate-a recent poll shows that now the majority of Republicans have a favorable view of both Hillary and her husband-again if you lived through the 90s it's as if the Sun hasn't risen in the West today.
After all, they failed to take him down. That the impeachment vote against him was frivolous and politically motivated is underscored by the fact that no one remembers it, least of all them. This by the way is why I don't think that a party line contempt vote against Eric Holder amounts to anything either-it is the same politically driven hatchet job.
As true bullies the Repugs only respect force and strength. Just like all bullies they one respect those that they learn from hard experience will hit them in the mouth. This is why Karen the Lonely Conservative-who posted a piece by a guest columnist Dr. Robert Owens(as a "Dr" he seems to be something of a quack) that Obama should be impeached-yes impeached in the doctor's terms he's writing the history of the Obama impeachment-doesn't get it.
Clearly Ms. Lonely doesn't get it. She does seem to know some major conservative interests like Dr. Owens. So she is on some level part of Press' Obama Hate Machine. Yet she did a post yesterday about some kids on a bus who made a bus monitor cry with their taunting.
"Yesterday morning I saw a clip of this video on the news and I had to choke back tears, it’s just heartbreaking. The cruelty that these kids unleashed on this woman was relentless. Do the parents of these foul-mouthed cruel teens have any idea what they’re unleashing on society?"
"After watching the whole video I still want to cry. (Language warning.) You hear about kids bullying other kids all the time, and that’s bad enough, but this is taking it to a whole new level. Whatever happened to respecting one’s elders?"
"The only good news is that this video has gone viral, and Karen Klein, the victim of this insane bullying, has some guardian angels who have raised money for her. Maybe she’ll have the last laugh after all."
"Where are the pubic sector unions to protect the Karen Klein’s of the world?"

I find this short post of Karen's very insightful. It shows that what we have is quite possibly a nice woman on her own terms who may well have been the victim of bullying or abusiveness in her own life. There's no question that bullying is an epidemic in today's American schools. Yet that last line about the public sector unions is revealing. How is it the fault of public sector unions?
Karen seems to have this sense of progressive Democrats has the bullies that make people cry. She has another piece called "Thank you Hater" which is a whimsical little musical piece where a woman receives hate filled tweets from progs. She rises up and sings a kind of Broadway piece thanking them for their bile.

She last week left a comment on my blog though she then claimed it was a fake-I don't know if she's claiming I did the fake which is ridiculous how would I know-this was the first I learnt of her existence? No doubt I fill her narrative with my blog title! What I think Karen doesn't get is that those friends of hers she thinks will protect her from the haters and bullies are themselves the biggest, most pitiless bullies of them all. If you look at what they said and did to President Clinton, and what they are saying and doing to President Obama, it's exactly what those mean kids did to that bus monitor. They themselves are the bullies!
Doing a clinton = no obamacare, no stimulus - he just does what makes the Fed happy - like Clinton
ReplyDeleteINSTEAD, Obama throws the public employees overboard like Clinton did with welfare, he gets a small tax increase bump with all his political capital (like Clinton) and spends ALL of his presidency on small bore issues (like school uniforms and Sister Soujah)
Look dude LISTEN to what my words mean, the exact idea I am putting across - repeating them and creating your own definition is not a legitimate intellectual strategy.
Look, if Obama wins then there is another path.
but if he loses, WAKE UP, and start understanding WHY you are boxed in, instead of imagining a heroic box breaking play, EAT IT and work out of the box with the actual tools you have... it doesn't end up bad for you, it jus ends up bad for public employees.
I'm sure Clitnon would have done a stimulus in 2009-the economy of 1993 was a little different. He tried his own version of ObamaCare-HillaryCare.
ReplyDeleteWhat you're saying is that it all comes down to November. If Obama wins you admit there's another path. Ok, that sounds fair enough, at least there's an empirical test.
