Chip Kelly: Either a Super Genius or the Village Idiot

There is just no longer any case to be made that there's an in between. Yeah, I got on Mike Greenberg a little for being so triumphalist about the Jets getting Revis back-I mean at the end of the day they are still probably number 4 in the division.

At least he admits that the dream move for the Jets was to get Foles as part of Kelly's move for Mariotta. I had thought the same thing: that Kelly might use Foles as bait for one of the teams that pick early which could have been the Jets at number 6 in the draft.

Greenberg put it well: 'Ok, I admit it, I have no idea what Chip Kelly is doing.'

I don/t think anyone does. Is this part of a plan to get Mariotta? If so it doesn't  make any sense as Nick Foles is much better bait than Sam Bradford. For me, if I'm one of these teams like the Titans, Raiders, or Jets I trade the pick for Mariotta in a second for Nick Foles who's a proven NFL QB. Ok, maybe Foles never throws 27 TDs and 2 pics again but he's very clearly an NFL QB who may well be a franchise QB in a league where it's very tough to win without one.

There is some risk with Foles after last year's injury and yes there was some drop off last year, though it's hard to read too much into it as he missed the second half. Still, to me it's less risk than getting Mariotta who I think is a bigger risk. We know what Foles is capable-we don't know if Mariotta as great as he was in college translates into an NFL starter.

Here's the thing. In no way I can see is Bradford an upgrade over Foles. In no possible way. The only argument I've heard is that the offensive coordinator was his QB coach in St. Louis. So what?

I mean in terms of an actual NFL body of work Foles has him beat. Even the risk with Foles-durability-has been an even bigger problem for Bradford. Meanwhile, Foles counts $1.5 million against the salary cap to $10 million for Bradford-who clearly has a better agent than Foles.

So I don't see how the Eagles are anything but worse off if Chip plans to keep Bradford-not talentwise and not against the salary cap. But guess what? Even if he plans to trade Bradford-for Mariotta or part of a larger scheme to get Mariotta-it makes no sense as Foles is much more attractive as trade bait for the reasons we've just stated-talent, durability, and even financially.

The Jeremy Maclin and LeSean McCoy deals seemed bad talentwise-and the McCoy deal looks bad durability wise too-but at least you could give Chip the excuse that it' was for cap space. This deal just fails on all three levels-talent, durability, and financially.

Again, has everyone missed something? Kelly is either a super genius or he's perhaps so smart that he's outsmarted himself. Either he's outsmarted the rest of us or himself.

UPDATE: For Kelly it's apparently all about system over any other concern-talent, durability, or financial. Bradford has some famaliary with his Oregon system and played with the Eagles offensive coordinator in St. Louis and that's all that matters.

Bradford will reunite with Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, who coached the quarterback with the Rams. It also will help that Bradford has a familiarity with the up-tempo system that Kelly runs, given his proficiency in the speed offense at Oklahoma.

"But since college, Bradford has been the talented prospect who was drafted No. 1 overall but habitually trying to put it all together. In St. Louis, it was one thing after another. System changes. Protection. Supporting receivers. Injuries. The last setback came in a preseason game in August."
