Ok So the Jets Get Revis

Ok, I get that Jets fans are celebrating as if they just won the Lombardi Trophy they haven't won in 45 years. Yes, the Jets win, they win the Darrelle Revis sweepstakes from the Patriots. Ok, I get why you're happy, Jets fans, but let me be honest with you. As a Giants fan I'm used to observing you up close. You have the tendency to get too happy too quickly. No doubt when you have as little success as the Jets that's what happens.

It certainly would seem that getting Revis back-on top of getting Brandon Marshall-and yes, the Jets seem to have hosed the Bears who get only a 5th round pick next year for a 1,000 yards per year receiver?-has made the Jets better.

However, here's the reality check: the Jets have a lot of room for improvement. You guys can win twice as many games next year and not have a winning record. And let's face it: it's not like you won when he was here. Yes, you got to consecutive AFC Championship games-another bug with Jets fans is they are too easily satisfied.

If the Pats lose the AFC Championship game they see it as a failed season, for Jets fans it's this great moment in sports history they all tell their grandchildren about. However, after that the team fell off. Rex Ryan remained his charismatic self and Revis remained Revis but the Jets didn't have a winning record again: the last 2 years of Revis led you to a 14-18 record. The Pats in that same period 24-8 without Revis:  that was the regular season; in the playoffs they lost the AFC title game both years-see my point?

So the Pats were able to win before Revis was a Patriot and the Jets still lost when he was a Jet. I'm just saying. Now no doubt the Jets should be very strong at cornerback and they are a better team now than before they resigned Revis.

Still, reality check: the Bills and Dolphins are also markedly better. The Pats certainly lost something here but-remember, 24-8 without Revis.

This brings us to something else. Sure the Jets are better, maybe a lot better-again a lot better would be 8-8 based on where they came from and they may not be that much better. The real key is what the Jets are going to pay him. Whatever the payday is and it will no doubt be huge, it's less money available for getting the team other impact players starting with: QB.

By overpaying Revis-I have no doubt that's what they did, the only question is by how much-it takes away what they can do elsewhere. That's the difference with the Pats. They simply don't overpay for players. They never take the attitude that one guy, no matter how great, is indispensable. I've got some mixed feelings about that attitude at least when taken to extremes.

However, they don't chase one guy. That's what the Jets have done here. It's exciting for Jets fans that they got their man, but that's never been the Patriots way.

UPDATE: The deal for Revis is 5 years for $70 million dollars making him the highest corner in history.
