Bruce Arians: LeSean McCoy-Kiki Alonso Trade a Great Trade for Buffalo

I don't see much chance it isn't  a great trade for Buffalo unless:

     1. McCoy is the victim of a freak injury that ends his career

     2. He's somehow peaked and nobody but Chip Kelly knows this. This isn't impossible: remember what happened to the Vikings with the Herschel Walker trade? He ran for 148 yards his first game with the Vikes and was never heard from again.

The difference was that the Vikings gave up all those draft picks. The Bills gave up just one LB who may end up being a great player-but isn't there yet. I mean on the level of resume-Kiki vs. LeSean-it's not even close. McCoy is an established great with a body of work. Yes, I get that the shelf life of RBs is not that high but he's only 26. I mean you have people talking about him like he's an old man while Alonso is this young buck but in reality he's just 1 year younger-26-25.

At the end of the day some say this is a good move for Chip because the system maters more than the player. Colin Cowherd argues that all a coach needs is a top QB and a system: any other player at other positions are replaceable.

When you think about it, there might seem to be some truth to it if you survey history. I mean Bill Walsh's Niners or Bellichick's Patriots. Both teams were really more about the system than great players-this is more true of the Pats who are playing in the salary cap era. Even my Ny Giants, the face of the team are Tom and Eli.

Still, I think Chip Kelly may be taking this idea a bit far. Running backs are important. I say this as a guy who prefers the new pass happy NFL to the old school philosophy that always said it was just pounding the ball and defense that wins championships, but RBs are getting downgraded a bit too far now perhaps.

If RBs don't matter why is everyone killing Pete Carroll for giving the ball to Russell Wilson-the star QB-rather than Marshawn Lynch-the start RB who doesn't talk to the press except in Turkey?

Ok, Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians makes a lot of sense.

"The LeSean McCoy deal came as a surprise to most of us when the news broke Tuesday night."

But Cardinals coach Bruce Arians saw it coming, because of course he did.

"I had some inklings that there might be something happening," he said Wednesday onNFL AM.
"On the trade, he added: "(It's) a great move for Buffalo not that Alonso is not a great player ... I think he is going to be coming off surgery. When you have LeSean's resume, it speaks for itself."

That to me is the key: LeSean is a great player while Alonso will hopefully be-it's not a guarantee as he's only had 1 year in the league and 2 ACL injuries. So I see the risk Kelly is taking there as considerable.
There's no question in my mind that Rex has done it this time. On top of getting McCoy, one of the best RBs in the league, he now has Matt Cassell who as some analysts were saying on the NFL network today, makes him already the best QB on the Bills. At least he will have Sam Watkins to throw to.
Less than 24 hours after swinging a headline-grabbing trade to acquire Philadelphia Eaglesrunning back LeSean McCoy, the Bills announced another deal Wednesday for Minnesota Vikingsquarterback Matt Cassel

"Just think: We're still six days away from the start of free agency, when the NFL's hot stove will heat up for real."

"By signing offensive lineman Richie Incognito last month and trading for McCoy and Cassel this week, the Bills have gotten a head start on the frenzy and have positioned themselves to make additional moves this March."

"Cassel will undoubtedly compete with EJ Manuelthis summer for the starting quarterback role, but there's no reason why it can't be a three-man race. Given the relatively cheap cost of acquiring Cassel and the lack of guaranteed money in his contract, which has one season remaining, the Bills could add another quarterback to the mix."

"Might it be Mark SanchezBrian HoyerMatt Moore? That's still unclear, but I wouldn't expect the Bills to stop here. Whether it's the draft or free agency, throwing a third quarterback into the ring would only strengthen the chances of finding a suitable starter for the 2015 season.

"No matter what they do next, there's been a clear pattern to the Bills' moves so far this offseason: They are at least trying to bolster their offense."

That's' what I'm stil waiting to see: a Rex reunion with the Sanchise.

As a Giants fan I can totally relate to Arians: it's great not to have to face McCoy-or DeMarco Murray who looks to be gone from the Cowboys-twice a year.

UPDATE: As you can see Matt Cassell has had his years at QB. He did a great job filling in for Brady in 2008-this was Matt's first year-and he had a great year for KC in 2010. If he gets the snaps it seems plausible he has a few years at least left-he's 32 which is often the start of a QB's prime.
