Rex Ryan's move to the Bills today has rocked the NFL and begs plenty of questions.
:The Buffalo Bills announced in a news release Monday that Rex Ryan has been hired to take over as coach. The news came a day after Ryan, the former Jets coach, tentatively accepted the Bills’ contract offer. Ryan replaces Doug Marrone, who stepped down abruptly on Dec. 31."
“Rex brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the position that we feel will be a tremendous benefit to our players and the entire Bills organization,” Terry Pegula, the team owner, said in a statement released by the team. “He was very impressive during the interview process, as were many of the candidates to which we spoke. And we feel Rex is the best fit for our team.”

The Bills are going to pay Rex $27.5 million dollars for 5 years. They also have to pay their departing coach, Doug Marrone, $4 million even though he's looking for another team to coach for. Even if he gets a job-and here's part of those incestuous moves I mentioned: he wants to coach the Jets-he still gets $4 mil from the Bills. Nice work if you can get it.
You hear people questioning why Rex wants to go to Buffalo-isn't it the same thing as with the Jets for 6 years: no bonafide franchise QB? Why not go coach Matt Ryan and Julio Jones in Atlanta where defense is what needs fixing?
There's truth in that but the answer seems to be that Rex had the same exact thought process: he wanted to go to Atlanta but they apparently rebuffed his advances as they did in 2008. Apparently their short list includes Dan Quinn who is also the Jets' favorite for the job right now-and for whatever inexplicable reason the Jets are Quinn's first choice.

You wonder if the Falcons may have made a big mistake as Quinn wants to go to the Jets.

I also heard an interesting question today by a sports guy on the local news whose name I couldn't get in time: why would the Bills want Rex who is the guy whose team the Bills drubbed twice in 2015, 43-23 and 38-3?
Of course, that's not a wholly accurate way to look at it-unless you believe that Rex was the weak link in NY and virtually no one seems to think that.
It isn't hard to guess why Rex, being on the short side of those two big scores might want a change of scenery. You could argue that this is a nightmare scenario for Jets owner Woody Johnson-and the rest of the Jets fans-if Rex does achieve the success in Buffalo he didn't have with the Jets.
It's conceivable he will-he did have those two title game appearances the first two years and it's quite arguable that the Jets never had as good a team-outside of QB-as the Bills have now.
After Marrone rebuffed the Bills, it was immediately announced that he was the leading candidate for the Jets' job. You have to admit he has quite an agent in pulling off that coup. It looks like while his agent's machinations led to some early returns it seems like since then Marrone's chances have fallen-there were some negative stories about him from a former assistant coach he worked with, the fact that there clearly isn't much of a market for him, and reports that he didn't do too well in the Jets interview.
Then there is the incontrovertible fact that the Jets clearly want Quinn. A much better question than why Ryan wants to go to the Bills-despite the evident QB problems-is why Marrone wants to go to the Jets after his team blew away Gang Green twice.
If Marrone were to end up coaching the Jets, it's not hard to see which coach made the upgrade in such an incestuous scenario.
