Obama's State of the Union Speech: Unbowed, Lot's of Swag

It was an observation of Chris Hayes on MSNBC last night but he was dead right.

In many ways this sums up his whole attitude since the alleged GOP wave election of November. Supposedly he had to come out and eat crow: it didn't happen and since then he's had more and more of what Hayes calls swag. As Hayes puts it, the President came out and acted like he's no lame duck but is relevant and demands to be treated with respect.

If you saw the speech-or even if you just watched clips from it later-you must know the best line: it was where the GOP tried to get snarky with him applauding loudly when he said he's ran his last campaign. If it had ended there this would have been a clip played over and over at Fox and on Rush. Instead:

"President Barack Obama delivered a rather unexpected applause line during his State of the Union address Tuesday night."

"I have no more campaigns to run," Obama said, attempting to proceed to the next sentence.
"However, Republicans saw a chance to snark on the president and seemed to deliver a relatively thunderous round of applause for the comment."
"Obama fired back with an impromptu line that got even more positive howls of support from Democratic lawmakers present. "
"I know because I won both of them," he quipped.

That was great. It's like they tried to reject his layup but when the slapped it the ball bounced 11 feet in the air and the President jumped up and completed the ally-oop.

Note I have no idea how you spell that. Greg Sargent sat with some struggling voters last night to gauge their reaction to the speech.

Maybe next he should get their reaction to the GOP response from Joni Ernst for their economic plan for the middle class. Actually no need, there was one item: the XL pipeline.
