I have say I'm surprised. I felt like he went the entire opposite direction to what I was thinking would be a good fit for him. Hey, it's his decision to make but it seemed to me that Atlanta was the perfect fit with an elite QB with Matt Ryan and and an elite receiver in Julio Jones.
My thought process was that this would be a welcome change of pace for a coach that is all about defense but whose glaring problem with the Jets was always not being able to find a bonafide franchise QB. As he seems to prefer focusing on the defense why not go to a defense that has real problems so he can turn it around and not have to worry about the QB situation as that's already in place.
Rex though apparently may want to win but apparently he wants to win his way. He wants to win because of the defense. How you win like this though remains to be seen. It seems to me that the Buddy Ryan style-his dad-he favors is dated by about 20 years.
The Bills have nice up and coming team but who's the QB? Can you win today without a dominant franchise QB? I can't think of an example of this in recent years.
"Rex Ryan didn't remain unemployed long and he didn't have to go far to find a job. According to multiple reports, Rex is close to becoming the next coach of the Buffalo Bills."

"The former Jets head coach, fired immediately after the season by Woody Johnson, was considered a candidate for the Falcons and 49ers jobs as well as the Buffalo gig."
"Buffalo lost Doug Marrone as coach after the second-year man opted out of his contract in a short three-day window offered under his contract because of the ownership change."
"It's not often you see coaches switch teams within a division (Parcells in '97 the last guy to flip like that), but Rex's move should make for some fun Jets-Bills games in the next few years."

I was sort of surprised he stayed in the AFC East as well. As this article suggests, maybe he wants to get another chance to beat Bill Bellichick-he always won the talking game, as Bellichick is the definition of 'taciturn' but at the end of the day he was just 4-9 against the Pats in NY-the Bills did beat the Pats at the end of the year-of course, Tom Brady and Gronkowski weren't in the game.
Maybe he will also relish a chance to beat the Jets twice a year? I have to say in a certain sense his choice makes more sense than Doug Marrone. After seeing the way the Bills whipped the Jets' butts this year Ryan felt maybe he should switch teams but how do you explain Marrone looking at the Jets after his team beat them 43-23 and 38-3 and saying 'Now there's my dream job?'
UPDATE: According to this article Atlanta was Ryan's first choice. The Falcons either weren't so interested or not aggressive enough.
