So if the Jets Deflate their Balls Geno Smith Will Turn into Tom Brady?

The question is meant to bring out the evident absurdity of the whole idea. I can't help but feel like this is all about Jets fans: they love this stuff as they can accuse the Patriots of 'cheating' and somehow dismiss all of New England's achievements.

The Jets were allegedly the victims of Spygate-where the Patriots videotaped the Jets' defensive coordinators signals-begging the question though how you can be in trouble for taping part of the field during a game that is out in plain sight-why couldn't other teams do the same thing? How was that inside information?

Look, reportedly the NFL is taking this seriously and there could be a fine and/or a lost draft pick-as there was in 2007.

For more on Spygate check out this book which I think I'll read as well.

Interestingly Mr. Always the Bridesmaid Never the Bride himself, Fran Tarkenton-he lost 3 super bowls and his Vikings lost 4-claims that deflating footballs slightly is nothing-there is rampant steroid use and he is the truth-teller trying to get it out and no one will listen. The CNN anchor wouldn't listen either as she basically turned off his mic.

Think about it: what's blowing up a football compared to steroids-assuming he is right and I have no idea though it wouldn't shock me. In a way that's a bad example though as I actually think steroids should be legal and that Bobby Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Mark McGuire all belong in the Hall of Fame.

How is steroids cheating if they are available to everyone? I think a lot of people seem to think it's wrong because steroids enable the athlete to do things they couldn't do just based on their on natural ability. Yet why should this be? There's a sense in which that's what greatness in sports is all about-transcending one's natural ability. I mean the diets and weight lifting regimen is not really 'natural'-I mean you want natural, it's Babe Ruth. In his era athletes didn't lift weights or watch their diets and they were not so physically different from the nonathletic general population. That's the problem. Today's athlete are already superhuman. Ruth was 5 foot 10 and 160 pounds-the average guy could imagine being him. That's' not possible with today's supermen.

I believe real cheating shouldn't happen but I tend to think of much of what is called cheating is specious. As for deflating a ball I'm pretty skeptical that it changed the game against the Colts at all. I mean if the Colts think that made the difference they're living in serious denial.

The score was 17-7 at the half. At the half the Colts let the refs know that the Pats might be deflating the balls. At the start of the 2nd half the refs checked the balls. So in the second half the balls weren't deflated and the score grew to 45-7. As Mike Lupica says this is hot air from those who are frustrated by the Pats' success.

P.S. In looking at that book on Spygate a bit more it truly looks like a great book. It clearly wants to make some shattering claims so I will definitely be reading it.
