Romney in London: Rove Astonished By Missed Opportunity

Talk about a missed opporunity. Somehow, Mitt Romney managed to whiff on a softball. This was not supposed to be hard. He would get to associate with the Olympitcs which would all to mind his own experience in Salt Lake City. Yet, Mitt failed a very simple diplomatic moment.

In all seriousness this goes to his character yet again. He simply is a horrible diplomat. Remember that Pittsburgh bakery where he insulted the food and asked it it's from a 7-Eleven?

"The takeaway from Romney’s big blunder seems to be not his knock on London’s preparedness specifically, but that he managed to blow what was seemingly an un-blowable opportunity. Politicos ranging from Charles Krauthammer to Harry Reid have expressed utter amazement that Romney could have blown what was in the end, a glorified photo op."

“I would go there and I would say, ‘They have done a remarkably good job. I know how they have been hurt with the economy. But they have done this. I have done it myself. It’s so hard to do, and they have done a remarkably good job,’” Reid told the Huffington Post. “That’s what they should have done. He would have been cheered and not have the mayor, before 60,000 people, belittle one of our major party nominees.”

Rove was quick to add it wasn't a big deal, but I think it's just another example of the narrative on Mitt Romney where he just doesn't get it. He lacks any sense of tact and this is because of his inability to empathize or relate to normal Americans.

In all seriousness. Romney was going here to look Presidential standing here with all these foreign leaders. However, does this first episode make you think he'll be any use at the delicate game of diplomacy? Again, I think he's a poor diplomat as he's not tuned in to people's feelings. Chris Christy himself made this point recently.

"On Thursday's "Special Report," Krauthammer launched into a rant about Romney's Olympics comment. "It's unbelievable, it's beyond human understanding, it's incomprehensible. I'm out of adjectives," he lamented."

"He said the purpose of Romney's trip was merely to express solidarity with America's British allies, and say nice things about his foreign hosts."

"All Romney has to do, say nothing," Krauthammer said. "It’s like a guy in the 100-meter dash. All he has to do is to finish, he doesn’t have to win. And instead, he tackles the guy in the lane next to him and ends up disqualified. I don’t get it."

I don't think anybody does. No matter how simple the task, Mitt finds a way to put his foot in his mouth.
