Mitt Romney is like the French with their Maginot line. Once they realized the Germans could basically just walk around it there was no Plan B.
This is why the situation is so desperate. Bain was Plan A and there is no Plan B. Sure he's got the Alec Brothers and Adelson spending more money than he personally has stashed away in the Cayman islands.
But all their investments are in the expensive Maginot Line. They have been slow to answer the Bain attacks and Romney has argued that if you're explaining your losing. There's some truth in this but there's also truth in the idea that unanswered charges in a political campaign must be true-that's the inference.
Romney argues that he just wants to debate the economy. The trouble is that his Bain experience was at the heart of his narrative on why he claims to understand the economy better than the President. As Krugman says:
"And here’s the thing: Romney is running for president entirely on the basis of his business success. In a better world he could be running on the basis of his successful health reform, but now he’s condemning that very achievement. In a better world he could actually be running on the basis of some kind of coherent policy ideas, but instead he’s offering nothing but a mix of tax cuts for the rich and benefit cuts for the middle class so extreme that focus groups refuse to believe that this is his actual proposal."
"Once the Bain record becomes a liability instead of a strength, there’s nothing there."
This is why the Bain attacks are legitimate and they are lethal for the Romney campaign. If you turn this into a liability there's nothing left. This is why you're now hearing about Condoleeza Rice; however the Right wing is now giving him a hard time over Condi. They find her unacceptable.

The beauty of her as Vice President would be perhaps a more mainstream appeal-well for starters she's Black and a woman and perhaps will seem more appealing to independents.
Nothing seems to work for Willard Mitt Romney.
