GOP Alabama Gov to Mitt: Release Your Taxes

It's really not a partisan issue. Nor is it in any way complicated. Every presidential candidate since, ironically enough, Mitt Romney's father, George Romney, has released many years of taxes. While Mitt is demanding an apology from the Obama team, it is his actions which are unprecedented.

Again, not a partisan issue. Every GOP candidate has done it and it was begun by Daddy Romney-a Republican.

"Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley, in an interview with ABC News today, called on presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney to release his tax returns in order to show voters that he has "nothing to hide."

"Bentley said that Romney's refusal to release more returns has created a "distraction" that Democrats were successfully exploiting."

"I just believe in total transparency," Bentley told ABC News at the National Governors Association conference. "In fact, I was asked today that question - do you think that Governor Romney should release his tax returns? And I said I do. I said, I release my tax returns. I may be the only public official in Alabama that does, but I release mine every year and I just believe that people should release their tax returns. And if you get them out and just get past that, it just makes it so much easier."

"They're doing everything they can to hurt Governor Romney and tax returns will be one of those things," Bentley said. "So the best thing to do is just get everything out in the open and just say, 'hey I have nothing to hide and I'm going to release my tax returns.'"

"The Republican governor, who voted for Rick Santorum over Romney in his state's presidential primary, added: "I think that it's always easier just to say, hey I'm releasing everything, and just get it out there and then get past it."

The Governor is, of course, absolutely right. If Romney has nothing to hide this is a very silly strategy to continue to refuse to 'release everything, just get it out there and get past it.'

So why do you suppose he won't?

In all seriousness, Gov. Bentley is right and the perfect example was how the President himself handled the Birther attacks. They made the wholly unreasonable demand for his long form birth certificate. Though there was no reason in the world why he had to show it-no other President in the middle of his term ever has-the President got out in front of the issue by simply releasing it.

This was the end of Birtherism. If Mitt Romney has nothing to hide the same will happen to the questions about his finances. Yet he chooses not to.
