The media always tries to make it about personality, to convince us that we should 'vote for the man not the party' but meanwhile McCrory has shown-as it seems to need to be shown again-that it's about 'the party not the man' in the way he flat out lied to North Carolina voters that he wouldn't pass any anti-abortion legislation.

When the good citizens of NC were faced with the choice of giving the GOP all 3 levels of government for the first time since Reconstruction McCrory had promised that he would sign no anti-abortion bills-his exact words were 'none' when asked at a debate. With this bill he will have already signed 2-with Bob McDonnell in disgrace, he's the new Governor Ultrasound:
"North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) signed a restrictive anti-abortion bill into law, CNN reported on Monday."
"The bill first passed the state's Senate and then its House of Representatives earlier this month.
According to a July Huffington Post report, the legislation will eliminate abortion coverage for public employees and individuals who have insurance through federal health care law's public exchanges. It also will ban sex-selective abortions and impose additional regulations on abortion clinics.
During an October 2012 gubernatorial campaign debate, McCrory said he wouldn't sign any additional restrictions on abortion into law."

Madonna was recently really criticized for saying that gay rights are far more advanced than women's rights. Overall, I think the very attempt to quantify 'who is more oppressed' is misguided. Discrimination against women manifests itself in a different way than that against gays and lesbians.

Nevertheless, I think that her comments are not as absurd as many tried to make out.

Gay rights though genuinely have had a real major move forward the last 15 years. Meanwhile. if you measure progress in women's rights by the safety and availability to abortion-and other forms of birth control-you have to say we seem to read about moving back every day.
"A three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld some of the most onerous parts of a Texas abortion law, which is likely to cause most of the state's abortion clinics close."
"The ruling, released Tuesday, allowed provisions requiring clinics to meet hospital-level operating standards and requiring providers to have admitting privileges at local hospitals to go into effect. It did exempt the last open clinic in the state's Rio Grande Valley from the provisions, which were passed by the Republican-controlled state legislature and signed by former Gov. Rick Perry (R) two years ago. In court, attorneys opposing the law said it could close all but eight clinics in Texas.
"In plain terms, H.B. 2 and its provisions may be applied throughout Texas, except that Supreme Court precedent requires us to partially uphold the district court’s injunction of the ASC requirement as applied to the Whole Woman’s Health abortion facility in McAllen, Texas, and to uphold the district court’s injunction of the admitting privileges requirement as applied to Dr. Lynn when he is working at the McAllen facility," the ruling read.

Conservatives have simply been very successful in their War on Women. This is due for 30 years and counting for a conservative dominated Supreme Court and in the Red states there are doing everything but simply declaring abortion illegal-in defiance of Roe v. Wade.
Again, I did say this is presuming that the treatment of abortion-and the larger question of contraception-is an important gauge of women's rights. It may not be everything-and there are divisions on the subject where even some women who consider themselves feminist are 'pro life.'
However, I don't see how in measuring women's progress-the contraception issue has taken a major step backwards as opposed to something like the believe in gay marriage.
What has to happen is we need Hillary in 2016-her election no doubt in itself will be a major moment of progress for women's rights; yes I am presuming her victory which by no means is saying we don't have to work for it-to be able to finally put the SJC back on a liberal footing. Secondly, something needs to be done about the states-the Dems need to focus more on ground operations for state government. Hillary herself has spoken on the need for this.
P.S. The idea that it's the party not the man is the basis for my twitter page where I quote Thaddeus Stevens approvingly-that great Radical Republican abolitionist-who said forget principles, it's the party. This is dead right and those who don't understand this make a muddle of things.

Basically if you're an informed voter you should be a partisan one as Wills argued. That's the point of my blog's rather arresting title.
