What's in the Confederate Flag?

There are those on the Right that continue to defend it's use. Mike Huckabee hides behind 'states rights.'

"NBC's Chuck Todd made several attempts on Sunday to get presidential candidate Mike Huckabee to weigh in on whether or not South Carolina should remove the Confederate battle flag from the Capitol grounds after the murder of nine black people at a church in Charleston last week."

"I still feel like it's not an issue for a presidential candidate," the former Arkansas governor responded.

"Huckabee said that South Carolina has a female governor and an African American senator, making it unfair to criticize the state for their flag. He complained about being "baited" with the question."

"In 2008, Huckabee addressed the Confederate battle flag at a rally in South Carolina.
"You don't like people from outside the state coming in and telling you what to do with your flag," Huckabee said."

"In fact, if somebody came to Arkansas and told us what to do with our flag, we'd tell 'em what to do with the pole; that's what we'd do," he added.

Not an issue for a presidential candidate: sounds like leadership. How do we vote for this guy?

With apologies to Morgan Warstler, this demonstrates once again that states rights is the last refuge of scoundrels. If you want to uphold bad or draconian laws, just hide behind 'Well I might not agree with it but it's up to the states to decide.'

Like in the issue of Obamacare, if you 'let the states decide' which is what the case before the SJC  is about right now, then you'll get millions of people without insurance that otherwise would have it.

States Rights was the basis for slavery, segregation, and separate but equal. It is currently destroying a woman's right to choose and the right to vote. Recently the SJC gave Southern states more states rights by striking down part of the Voting Rights Act and the outcome was exactly as anti-libertarians would have predicted it.

As for the Confederate flag you have to be really obtuse to defend it as Huckabee is doing-yes, hiding behind states rights.

     Even Mitt Romney gets it.

Not surprisingly, President Obama gets it:

"As many critics call on South Carolina to take down the Confederate flag flying near its statehouse, the White House reiterated President Obama's stance on the symbol.
Obama believes "the Confederate flag belongs in a museum," White House spokesman Eric Schultz told reporters aboard Air Force One Friday."

However, while the SC Governor may be female she doesn't get it:

"South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) has defended the Confederate flag in the past, arguing in 2014 that she has not "had one conversation with a single CEO about the Confederate flag." She said this week that she didn't have the legal authority to take it down, but that she expected to have a "conversation" about it with her constituents."

"South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham told CNN Friday it's up to South Carolinians, but that the flag "is part of who we are."

Seeing that Roof brandished the Confederate flag you might think this would cause Graham some embarrassment in just blandly saying 'It''s part of who we are.'

Libertarian shamelessness. Meanwhile Detroit gets it:
