This Would Be a Good Time for GOP to Listen to George W. Bush

Of course, this will be the time they choose not to listen. However, immigration reform was one thing President Bush had right. Even Karl Rove recently pointed out the folly of Republicans hoping they can simply increase the White vote by so much that they can just kiss off the Hispanic vote as they have in the last two presidential elections.

Rove points out that this can't work as the Hispanic vote continues to grow. One absurd idea is that the GOP only needs to increase the White vote by 2 million and they can ignore the Hispanic vote. This error is due to them forgetting that even if the White vote were to return to its previous level, Obama still got over 40% of it-so that it wouldn't all go to a Republican in 2016

Rove's hero did get immigration right despite getting so much else wrong and it did get him well over a third of the Hispanic vote in two elections. Now Bush is declaring that immigration 'has a chance' to pass the House.

"Former President George W. Bush said in an interview that immigration reform has a "chance to pass."

"I think it's very important to fix a broken system, to treat people with respect, and have confidence in our capacity to assimilate people," Bush said in an interview that aired Sunday on ABC's "This Week." "It's a very difficult bill to pass because there's a lotta moving parts.  And the legislative process is-- can be ugly. And-- but it looks like they're making some progress."

"Bush added that one of his frustrations while in office was that he was unable to get immigration reform passed."

It was his own party that did him in on that one. Of course, if they kicked Bush in the teeth they'd be even happier to do this to Obama. Yet, there is a difference. The politics had turned against immigration in 2007 and is not doing so this time. To the contrary most Americans support immigration reform now.

Also so much of the GOP party establishment-from the RNC to the Koch Brothers, to Rove and his deep pocketed S-Pac-to the Wall Street Journal editorial page supports it this time. The question is John Boehner: does he let it fail? I continue to say no.

While there is a movement to kill it in the GOP House, even these Tea Partiers who oppose immigration reform who hate the idea of a path to citizenship still feel the need to justify their opposition-which again points to the different politics in the air this time.

"While Republicans settle on a least-bad immigration strategy, it’s dawned on reform opponents and their conservative allies that if the effort dies in the House, they’ll need to bring a plausible excuse to the public — that is, if they hope to sidestep at least some of the blame for the debacle."

Yeah. Wait till you hear the excuse: Obamacare made us not vote for immigration reform. Specifically, the employer mandate being postponed for a year means that Obama can't be trusted on anything and won't honor the Senate bill's demand for effectively doubling the number of border agents.

Yep, as usual, the reasoning is stupefying-Obama has discretion on implementing the employer mandate that the GOP is not a friend of anyway. That's in no way commensurate with the Senate bill's request for the big increase in agents and more security and the Obama White House would honor this-as needless a waste of time and money as it is; the Wall Street Journal has done as well as anyone in pointing to what a wasteful farce this is

However, the GOP while admitting here that it's what they want are pretending they can't count on it because Obama delayed a part of Obamacare implementation he has the legal right to.  Again, though I think Boehner will ultimately put this up.

P.S. I see that Harry Reid agrees with me. I like me and Harry agreeing on things. Obviously I say Boehner will eventually have to put it up because that's what I think will happen. I feel even better about this prognosis with Harry on my side.

P.S.S.  Bush has promised the GOP 'it will exist in the future.'

However, he didn't really offer much reason why in that speech back in April. If they think Bush it worth listening to now is the time. Mind you it's a catch-22. Bush remains a very unpopular former President. How unpopular is shown by the fact that he wasn't at the RNC convention last August.

Yet, who should the party listen to-Mitt Romney? Bush can boast to being the last to win a presidential election-indeed, he won two, though he may have had a little help.
