A lot of people believe that. I believe this. However, now we have a member of the 6 member jury saying this. To hear Juror B29's comments-her name is Maddy as she has waived anonymity-is simply earth shaking. Initially all 6 jurors were under an anonymity request. However, this didn't last long.
The first business day after the verdict, Juror B37 had already signed a book deal and doing a CNN interview. This interview actually put off many as she seemed to be rather oblivious as to the impact of her decision. She blandly said that no one in the jury even considered the matter of race and that-when asked is she feels bad for Trayvon Martin-said she feels bad for them both-a rather extraordinary position that showed an extraordinary amount of concern for Zimmerman in equating his inconveniences with the trial to Martin's death at the age of 17.
Since that rather notorious interview, she's changed her tune. She's dropped the book and is making noises about feeling deeply for Martin and his family. She then came to the conclusion that a lot of other people did in watching her initial interview-she sounded isolated and clueless about the true pain and raw emotions this has caused.
In a statement, B37 said that being sequestered with the fellow jurors for nearly a month had insulated her from the intense emotions over the case. Supporters of Martin were outraged by the not guilty verdict.

Then four other jurors came out with a joint statement that distanced themselves as much as they could from Juror B37. They assured the public that her comments were not representative of them and their actions or thoughts during the trial. views.
The four jurors issued a brief statement Tuesday on court stationery saying the opinions expressed by JurorB37 to CNN's Anderson Cooper are not representative of their views.

What is also very important as this statement shows is that the reason she ultimately went with not guilty is because of Stand Your Ground. There's been a lot of debate about the law's importance for the verdict. I myself wasn't sure until I read the jury instructions-and compared them with what jury instructions in Florida looked like before SYG was passed in 2010.

The weight of this verdict haunts her she says and she has a hard time sleeping. This should at least give the Justice Department ammunition to reopen the federal case.

In a statement, B37 said that being sequestered with the fellow jurors for nearly a month had insulated her from the intense emotions over the case. Supporters of Martin were outraged by the not guilty verdict.
“That isolation shielded me from the depth of pain that exists among the general public over every aspect of this case,” she said in a statement her former agent Sharlene Martin released to ABC station KABC.
“…I have realized that the best direction for me to go is away from writing any sort of book and return instead to my life as it was before I was called to sit on this jury,” her statement said.
"The opinions of Juror B37, expressed on the Anderson Cooper show were her own, and not in any way representative of the jurors listed below," said the statement, signed by Jurors B51, B76, E6 and E40. The six-sentence statement did not specify what parts of the other juror's comments they disagreed with.
However, B29's comments are truly are a bombshell. She says that she was the second degree murder vote-there were also two manslaughter votes-and that she believes Zimmerman got away with murder:
"The parents of Trayvon Martin reacted Thursday to an interview a juror in the George Zimmerman trial gave to ABC News, in which she admitted that she ultimately, she didn’t hold out for a conviction."
"The Juror, known only as B29, or “Maddy,” since she revealed herself — including showing her face — to ABC’s Robin Roberts, said Zimmerman “got away with murder” in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, but that Florida law, as understood by the jury, made it impossible to convict."
“I was the juror that was going to give them the hung jury. I fought to the end,” she said during the interview, for which ABC News aired clips on Thursday. “That’s where I felt confused, where if a person kills someone, then you get charged for it. But as the law was read to me, if you have no proof that he killed him intentionally, you can’t say he’s guilty.”

Why don't you quote some of her other statements? Why just the ones that fit your narrative? She also said she believed this never should have been brought to trial and that it was political and that race was not mentioned once in deliberations? You're supposed to be someone who gets the story out, why slant it?
ReplyDeleteIs that you Patrick?
DeleteWhich one are you talking about-B29 or B37? If B29 said it shouldn't come to tial but that he was guilty it makes no sense. B37 said this before the trial which makes you wonder what the prosecution was thinking in letting her on the jury.
