On Bill Clinton's Convention Speech

I love Clinton but I get so sick and tired of all the endless attempts by the media to make this a soap opera about the "difficult relationship" between he and the President.

You get all these theories that Clinton would like Obama to lose-to help Hillary in 2016; I tend to take that with a grain of salt. I love Hillary and supported her first in 2008 but the base thought she was somehow a turning back of the clock to the 90s.

Now in 2016 she would be a forward looking choice? I guess some things have changed. We all look back to the 90s now as almost a Golden Age. Everyone seems to love the Clintons now most of all the GOP...

If she can win in 2016 more power to her, I would love to vote for her finally. But what I care about today is re-electing President Obama. No one seems to think that maybe Clinton really believes that it's vital that the President win re-election, that if he doesn't we will find ourselve back in a pre-New Deal dystopia-these are words he himself has used.

Implicit is the assumption that Clinton is totally venial and cares nothing about the party.

Having said that, I'm a little concerned that the Obama team have not vetted his speech yet. You do hope he not repeat anything like the "sterling business career and more than meets the qualifications threshold to be President" line back in June.

This "endorsement" is still being used on Romney's website.

"They’re quite different in their skill sets, but they really complement each other in ways that are really important to this year’s election,” said former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, a former supporter of Hillary Clinton who became one of Obama’s most effective surrogates in the 2008 general election. “There is nobody who could be more effective as an advocate for the president’s policies than Bill Clinton.”

"Another Democrat, close to both men, agreed but added a major caveat. “I think [Clinton] will be great, but it’s always this big high-wire act with him. If he says one thing out of sync with Obama, everyone will pounce. … I don’t think that will happen, but it could be a huge problem.”

That's the thing-Clinton must not say anything else that will give any aid and comfort to Romney. You know they're going to be all over that speech. It is ironic though that even the GOP-especially the GOP-wants to be Clinton's best friend -whereas no one even will admit to knowing George W. Bush.

Not that I think Clinton will blow it. After all, he made a great speech in 2008 and that was when the feelings over the campaign were much more raw than today.

Indeed, I don't think there's much doubt that Clinton will be a great surrogate for Obama-he was one of the few Democrats to defend the President back in his 2010 book.
