The Innocence of Muslims: Are There Any Limits to Free Speech?

For the most part I want to say know. However, it must be appreciated just how egregious the actions of Nakoula Basseley Nakoula and Steve Klein were in putting together that anti-Islamic film-"The Innocence of Muslims."

It was produced with the intent not only to insult and desecrate Islam-they knew perfectly well how blasphemous Muslims would find it-this was done so deliberately so as to produce the kind of reaction we've seen over the last few days.

I don't like the idea of putting someone in jail because of their words but there is the check long cited in law that you may not yell fire in a crowded theater.

However, isn';t this exactly what Nakoula-the film's creator-and Klein-who claims to have given Nakoula the idea-meant to do? They desired to yell fire in a crowded theater.

The fact that we have people dead, including the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, was their intent. They wanted to offend Muslims the world over in as visceral a way as possible. So in their mind they think the death and mayhem validates them.

In their minds they can now proudly gloat: "See we told you that's what Muslims are like. Islam is a violent , evil religion."

"Klein claims credit for inspiring “Sam Bacile” to produce “The Innocence of Muslims,” promising him he would be “the next Theo Van Gogh,” referring to the Dutch columnist who was murdered by a Muslim extremist. Of the attacks in Libya, Klein said, “We went into this knowing this was probably going to happen.”

So he knew this would "probably" happen and he feels that it has happened validates him and the extreme Right wing Christian activist groups in California he runs with.

Seeing as he knew this is he guilty of any crime? To deliberately cause violence and murder to make a point?

Not only did they deliberately set out to not just offend Muslims but elicit a violent response in their hope of repudiating Islam they also insulted Jews and possibly left them vulnerable to further attacks by initially claiming that the movie was produced by a "Sam Bacile" who was supposed to be an Israeli born American.

So we have these extreme Christian cults insulting Jews and Muslims and trying to fan the flames of a modern day Holy War.

And they think it only makes Islam look bad.

There has been some remarks on the fact that many in the Middle East seem to think that if a film is made in a particular country, say the U.S. then it's the sentiment and voice of the entire country. So they imagine that President Obama must have personally signed off on this vile film.

Nevertheless I wonder if we can just simply allow this to continue. The bigoted pastor, Terry Jones, down in Florida is intent on fanning the flames more and more. He had a 15 second video of the movie on 9/11 and promises to show it at his church in the future.

Would you want to be on that congregation? I know I wouldn't. Talk about making yourself a target.
