Greek President Karolos Papoulias' Plan to Defy the Greek People's Will

He is trying to work out a unity government but it would be limited to his Socialist party Pasok, the conservatives' New Democracy party and the Democratic Left. His hope is to leave out the Coalition of the Radical Left, or Syriza.

It's pretty clear what Papoulias is after. If this would work by May 17 they can avoid another election. Luckily at least until now the Democratic Left has ruled out any alliance that doesn't include Syriza which placed second on last Sunday's election and right now the polls favor to win a new election-with a leading 28% of the vote.

The only thing left for the austerity lovers is to try to make it about staying in the euro which about two thirds of the Greek people do want to do. Just so they are also opposed to austerity. If the position of Merkel, Draghii and company remains "our way or the highway" then Greece should consider the highway-default.

Syriza is feared because they have called for the bailout package to be ripped up. All things being equal I think it would be better for them to stay in the euro. However "all things being equal" means Merkel and company finally coming down from their high horse. If not then by all means Greece should try the highway.
