Austertiy Repudiated-So Goes France Part 2

As promised here is the follow up my last post "As Greece Goes" with this one "So Goes France." I couldn't resist it I admit. For those who don't follow the allusion, it refers to a great day in Diary of a Republican Hater-this is a pretty good one too for that matter-Election Day, 1935 when  FDR had the greatest landslide in US history while his Democrats massively swept to huge super majorities in both houses of Congress.

The only two states to vote for Republican challenger Alf Landon were Maine and Vermont-so it was said 'As Maine goes so goes Vermont.' Yesterday was a pretty sound political thrashing for austerity lovers, those who believe that national budgets should be written not by the people's legislators in people's own interests but rather, by the bondholders in their own best interests.

"France has awoken to a new era after electing Socialist Francois Hollande as president, a leftist pledging to buck Europe's austerity trend and NATO's timetable for Afghanistan."

"After an appearance before thronging crowds on Paris' Place de la Bastille in the early morning hours Monday during which he pledged "to finish with austerity," Hollande was back at work, arriving at his campaign headquarters around 10:30 a.m. local time."

This of course is a big one. The anti austerity win in Greece was important and symbolic as it's where austerity started in the EU's most troubled nation. It's significant in France because France is a big fish. It can't be pushed around so easily. If Hollande really does intend a new path-and if he wants to win re-election he had better for his own good-then ipso facto the EU as a whole will have to change.

To be sure there are already signs of this with the new proposed Growth Pact along with the Fiscal Pact.

Right now Hollande is a man talking the talk. We can only judge his walk later.

"Austerity can no longer be inevitable!" Hollande declared in his victory speech after a surprising campaign that saw him transform from an unremarkable figure to an increasingly statesmanlike one. He will take office no later than May 16.

Speaking to exuberant crowds, Hollande portrayed himself as a vehicle for change across Europe.
"In all the capitals ... there are people who, thanks to us, are hoping, are looking to us, and want to finish with austerity," he told supporters early Monday at Paris' Place de la Bastille. "You are a movement lifting up everywhere in Europe, and perhaps the world."

In 1961 President Kennedy declared "Today we are all Berliners!" Today we are all Frenchmen.

    Viva La France!
