Of course he's already seen it happen at home with the major pickups for Labor at the expense of his Conservatives last week.

However, he says he gets it.
"My reaction to last week's local election results is straightforward: I get the message, loud and clear," Cameron wrote in the centre-right Daily Telegraph newspaper.
"The message people are sending is this: focus on what matters, deliver what you promise -- and prove yourself in the process. I get it."

That sounds like maybe he doesn't get it. I don't think the British people want him to deliver what he promised because he promised to deliver the wrong thing-austerity. As that is the wrong thing it seems that Cameron does not get it. So it sounds like he may well be going the way of Sarkozky, Papendreou an other austerity lovers.
The trouble with austerity is that it's not pain with gain but rather no gain all pain. But the pain is most for the austerity loving politicians who would rather serve the interests of international bondholders than their own people's interests. Their pain though will be the public's gain.
