Obama Takes Out Bin Laden and GOP Only Gets to Whine About It

It's just like one of those t-shirts-my parents went to Disney World and all I got was this lousy t-shirt. The GOP is its usual shameless self.

They have nothing left so they accuse the President of being boastful about doing what George W. Bush failed to do in eight years and what Mitt Romney said in 2007 was no priority.

This is the real nub of the problem. The GOP always likes to flatter itself as the national security party. Not that this is necessarily what history shows. In fact when you think about it, it was a Democrat who won WWI, a Democrat who won WWII, and a Democrat who came up with the Cold War game plan-the Marshall Plan.

Nevertheless the GOP had managed to build this reputation during the second half of the 20th century and there's no question-if you're foreign policy preference is to not speak softly like Teddy Roosevelt said but speak very unsoftly and as hawkish as possible then as Mitt Romney once said, "vote for the other guy."

No, the GOP has the market cornered on big talk but the results are often different. But this kills them. This is supposed to be their place but clearly they can't hit Obama credibly on foreign policy. They certainly can't argue with taking out Bin Laden.

So their answer is to whine about the President showing off. This is the part of George W. Bush and the "Mission Accomplished" pictures.

Romney on the other hand has nothing to credibly say about foreign policy. Ironically he's sort of the anti McCain. McCain back in 2008 actually was not shy in admitting more than once that economic issues don't interest him. This was a time when the economic crisis was the issue America was concerned about.

All McCain wanted to talk about was hawkish foreign policy issues, basically who he wanted to launch a war against. Romney is more or less the opposite of this. His whole ideology is that he's the guy to get this economy going again that he somehow has the "gravitas" that Obama lacks and will do this. I don't really buy it but that's his spiel.

However he has no foreign policy experience. True Obama you could argue didn't have much in 2008-though he did have some experience in the Senate. But there really is no record of Romney saying anything of interest about foreign policy, ever. Michael Steele was asked point black by Chris Mathews the other day and was totally stumped.

No wonder their stuck complaining about the sin of boastfulness. Next week their going to campaign against talking with your mouth full.
