Oh Yes They Did! Chuck Grassley Ties Boston to Immigration Reform

I didn't want to believe this would be widespread. There had been a lot of good reason to praise the reaction of our country to this tragedy. America is growing up. It's like when Krugman had argued in an unrelated point that the country today is in many ways a better country than in the past.

I had hoped that Ann Coulter and her ilk were just bad apples; she's usually their titular leader anyway. True, we the anti immigration forces are mobilized and determined.

However, now, it's much tougher to minimize this use and abuse of Boston as just something a few bad apples are doing. We now have a major Senator doing this: Chuck Grassley.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), speaking at the first Judiciary Committee hearing on immigration reform Friday, tied the issue to bombings this week in Boston that were allegedly perpetrated by immigrants who had reportedly lived in the United States for years."

"Given the events of this week, it’s important for us to understand the gaps and loopholes in our immigration system," he said. "While we don’t yet know the immigration status of the people who have terrorized the communities in Massachusetts, when we find out, it will help shed light on the weaknesses of our system."
"How can individuals evade authorities and plan such attacks on our soil?" he continued. "How can we beef up security checks on people who wish to enter the U.S.? How do we ensure that people who wish to do us harm are not eligible for benefits under the immigration laws, including this new bill before us?"
So we don't know the status yet but we should already speculate about it. Is there some reason to thin only immigrants commit terrorist acts? We have some counterexamples for that one. In any case, these young men came to this country as children. How do you screen someone for how they might in many years turn into a terrorist? The best we know they and their family came here legally.
So while there was reason to hope Coulter and friends were just a few bad apples Grassley now makes you wonder if the whole bunch will turn out to be bad.  We'll see how often Boston is reference for an argument against the immigration bill.
