Krugman-and the American People-Against the World

Joe Scarborough has repeatedly tried to draw Krugman as one of a very small group of eccentrics who don't think the deficit is the biggest concern right now.

However, yesterday a new poll bearing his name. shows that Americans by an over 2 to 1 margin favor job creation over deficit cutting at the present time.

"A poll released Wednesday showed a huge majority of Americans believe President Barack Obama and Congress should prioritize job creation, far more than the sliver of the country that believes Washington should prioritize deficit reduction."

"The inaugural Morning Joe/Marist poll found 64 percent of Americans saying the Obama administration and leaders on Capitol Hill should make job creation their top priority. Just 33 percent said deficit reduction should be the top priority."

"Despite the intense focus on deficit reduction among top Republican leaders, the poll found rank-and-file GOP voters divided between the two options. A slight majority of Republicans — 51 percent — said they want the focus to be on deficit reduction, while 46 percent favor prioritizing job creation. The overall majority that gave precedence to job creation included 76 percent of Democrats."

So Joe's math was a little off when he declared that it's Krugman against the world.

Clearly if what the American people want counts, we'd have some job creation focus right now. Yet we don't seem to be getting this. However, I wouldn't be so cynical as to suggest that the people's vote doesn't count. Unless you look at the House where Democrats received the majority of the votes yet we have a sizable GOP majority.

Or at recent NY politics where the Democrats should now have a 33-30 edge in the State Senate, yet the Republicans continue to run the Senate thanks to Alex Smith and other corrupt Democrats.

Other than that there's no reason to think that our vote doesn't count. Well...
