It's just the two extremities. The President looks in pretty good shape right now. His likability level has always been high. When I used to spar over on Firedoglake they heaped scorn when I pointed out that no matter what he's very well regarded by the American people.
Back then they'd always go back to the numbers on the economy-two thirds thought the economy is going in the wrong direction and didn'/t approve of his handling of it. However this all seems much less plausible now. The economy has been making steady gains since the last half of last year.
It also doesn't hurt that we have the contrast to how bad Europe-and Britain-are. No doubt there will be those who will try to argue he is getting too much credit for the economy. There's always a case that the President gets too much credit for a good economy and too much blame for a bad one. Obama certainly was blamed excessively when it wasn't.
Clearly the main reason for the weak first half performance of the economy in 2011 were the one time shocks-Japan, war in the Middle East, Europe.
I still think the President's personal popularity helps. Even during the bad times people knew his heart with in the right place and he was trying. Now that the economy is coming back the GOP has nothing. If attacking contraception is their master strategy they are truly in trouble.
Again it's all about Operation Hilarity. Democrats for Santorum!
