Here in NY and in many places in the Northeast it's been a very mild winter. In fact we have not had any sustained snowfall yet here coming into the middle of January. While December did get very cold particularly early and late in the day, recently here in Nassau, NY it has gotten quite warm lately too.
Why is this is a big question. The worst case scenario is that this is due to global warming and maybe in the not so near future we will find large parts of the world, even our neck of the woods uninhabitable. While having it not get so cold and not snow is nice, it won't be so nice if the summer proves to be much warmer than usual as well.
On the other hand if it was cooler than normal this could be the best of all worlds though I'm not counting on that one. As someone who is currently reduced to counting on public transportation-and in fact Long Island Bus has now been privatized and now called "NICE"-we'll see how nice they prove to be-skeptical-the better whether is very helpful.
The best I can say is that while it may be another sign that we are coming to the "Eve of Destruction" but for now it helps. As Keynes said, "In the long run, we are all dead."
