For those who say that this is not 2007 again that each year is different with lots of different players obviously that's true. Still...
There are just too many similarities! This is surreal at this point. Just like in 2007 the 2011 Giants were lightly regarded coming into the season and in neither year did they have a terribly impressive record-10-6 in 2007, 9-7 this year. In each year they had to win a most game late in the year following a pitiful 13 point home loss to a mediocre Washington Redskins team that was playing for nothing but pride.
Both teams had to win lots of road games against teams with much better records and were heavy underdogs. This team did have one home game this time against the Falcons in the Wild Card game but then had to play the 15-1 Packers and then the 13-3 49ers on the road. In 2007 they beat the 13-3 Packers after the 12-4 Cowboys on the road.
In 2007 there was the team nobody was supposed to be able to beat, the 18-0 Patriots. The Giants did the impossible. This year it was the 15-1 Packers who were supposed to be unbeatable. What makes it even more uncanny is that in 2007 the Giants had played the Patriots the final week of the season with the Pats 15-0 and going for a perfect season.
The Patriots were successful that night but only after the Giants at one point had a 28-17 2nd half lead before finally succumbing 38-35.
What is so uncanny is that the Giants had played the Packers at 11-0 and lost by the final score of 38-35. Now the Giants are going to play this Super Bowl against the 13-3 Patriots of all teams. This is very fitting. Of course one of those 3 Patriot losses was a home regular season loss 24-20 again throwing mud in the eye of all those who found it absurd that Eli could think he was on the same level as Brady.
This game is going to be a real challenge as the Patriots are coming into this game with a chance at redemption. But there are so many similarities between the two seasons. While the game will be a challenge is it more so than beating the Packers on the road? To beat Brady yet again would be the perfect way to end this season. At this point who can bet against the NY Giants?
I just can't get enough of the similarities between the 2007 and 2011 Giants. Another both teams not only had modest records 10-6 in 2007, 9-7 this year but the 2007 team only outscored its opponents by 22 points, a very low point differential. This year's 9-7 team was actually outscored by the opposition during the regular season, 394-400.
This was after winning the final two they needed to make the season against the hated Jets and Cowboys by a combined 60-28. Indeed the win over the Jets (29-14) was their first blow out of the season-an NFL blowout is roughly a minimum of about 14 points like in baseball it's about 5 runs.
The blowout of the Jets started a 4 game streak of blowouts of Dallas (31-14), Atlanta (24-2) and Green Bay (37-20).
Go Giants! I can't wait for the Game. I will probably go to Applebees. I love when women dress up for football games sporting jerseys-even cooler the ones who go all out and paint their faces or write stuff on their face or arms... I told this attractive waitress yesterday that I'm sure her Nicks Jersey one the game for the G-Men.
One of these days I want to hold a contest-the best football outfit. Maybe there could be one for the Super Bowl.
